The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League 2024 kicked off with a vibrant opening ceremony at Merchant Taylors' Hall in London, England. The event was a celebration of chess and featured several highlights that captured the audience's attention. One of the standout moments was when celebrated chess journalist Peter Doggers unveiled his new book, "The Chess Revolution." Following this, renowned players Arjun Erigaisi and Anish Giri joined Doggers for an engaging discussion, sharing insights and experiences from their chess journeys.

In a noteworthy announcement, Sameer Pathak, the CEO of TMGCL, revealed that the ChessBase India YouTube channel had reached an impressive milestone of 2 million subscribers. He congratulated the team for their significant contributions to promoting chess through digital platforms. The ceremony also recognized various teams with special awards for their exemplary moves both on and off the board, emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship and creativity in the game.

As the evening progressed, teams posed with the coveted winner's trophy, symbolizing their aspirations for the tournament. The event concluded with an entertaining acapella performance, leaving attendees inspired and excited for the matches ahead. The opening ceremony successfully set the tone for what promises to be an exhilarating season of chess competition.

On Day 0 of a round-robin tournament, the Draw of Lots is conducted to determine the initial pairings for the matches. This process ensures that the matchups are set in advance. As previously announced, all players from one team will compete with the same color—either white or black—during their first encounter. When the teams meet again, the colors will be inverted, allowing each player to experience both color assignments.

However, the question of which team will play with white or black in their first match against a new opponent will be resolved shortly before the game begins. This decision will be made 30 minutes prior to the match, either through a Draw of Lots or a similar method of chance. This approach maintains an element of unpredictability and excitement, adding to the competitive spirit of the tournament. It also ensures that teams must be prepared to adapt their strategies based on their color assignments, which can significantly impact their gameplay.

World No. 3 GM Arjun Erigaisi and World No. 20 GM Anish Giri took to the stage to discuss the Global Chess League's potential impact on the chess community. Erigaisi drew an intriguing parallel between the GCL and the Indian Premier League (IPL), suggesting that just as the IPL transformed cricket, the GCL has the potential to revolutionize the world of chess. Later, Giri returned to the stage with his team, the PBG Alaskan Knights, for a photo opportunity with the trophy. True to his playful nature, Giri humorously remarked that he was present for the “content and social media,” while confidently asserting that his teammates would focus on playing exceptional chess.
