Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen is once again ready for the challenge as he will be taking the seat for the Alpine SG Pipers in the second edition of the Global Chess League. The 6-team chess tournament is scheduled to begin from 3 October 2024 in London.
GM Magnus Carlsen recently clinched victory in Division I of the 2024 Julius Baer Generation Cup, defeating GM Alireza Firouzja 2.5-1.5 in the Grand Final. After a series of intense battles that ended in three hard-fought draws, Carlsen showcased his strategic brilliance by breaking through in the fourth and decisive game.
GM Magnus Carlsen is poised to take the 2024 Global Chess League seriously, as the matches will be rated by FIDE for its monthly rapid list. Currently, Carlsen leads this list by a substantial 52-point margin over his closest competitor, China’s Wei Yi, who is also participating in the London event.
Carlsen plays for the Alpine Warriors, making them strong contenders not only due to his presence but also because of their formidable women’s duo. The team boasts the all-time No. 2, Hou Yifan, alongside Russia’s Kateryna Lagno, who are widely regarded as one of the strongest female pairings in the league. With such a powerful lineup, the Alpine Warriors are expected to be major favorites in the competition.
