The Indian cricket team is currently one of the strongest teams in the world having one of the best batsmen and bowlers in their team, who can single-hendedly change the momentum. But, to become one of the biggest cricket-playing nations in the world, the Indian cricket team has gone through several ups and downs while representing their country. Despite being a part of a country where Cricket is not just considered as a sport, but as an emotion! Several Indian cricket team players have made the whole nation head down after being involved in match-fixing charges.
Through this article, we are going to talk about 3 Indian Cricket Players who were charged and booked for match-fixing, in their cricketing career.
1. Mohammad Azharuddin
Mohammad Azharuddin was known as one of the best batsmen in his time having great skills and class with leadership skills. He has led the Indian team in 2 Asia Cup tournaments in 1991 and 1995. Under his leadership, the Indian team performed well as they reached the semi-finals of 1996 ICC Cricket World Cup. He was among the captains who led the Indian team in three World Cups.
But his cricketing career came to an end, in 2000 when he was involved in a match-fixing scandal during India's tour of South Africa, which was won by the Indian team by 3-2. The Indian captain scored just 112 runs in the series with an average of 28. He was accused of match-fixing after the completion of the series when the captain of South African team Hansie Cronje said that Azharuddin was the one who introduced him to bookies.
After this incident, BCCI and ICC banned Azharuddin for life based on a report by the Central Bureau of Investigation. However, in 2012, the Andhra Pradesh High Court lifted the life ban after an appeal.
2. Ajay Sharma
Another Indian player, who comes to this list is Former Indian cricketer Ajay Sharma, who was banned for a lifetime by ICC and BCCI after, he was involved in a match-fixing scandal in 2000.
Ajay Sharma was one of the talented batters during his team where he has a great record in first-class cricket from Delhi by scoring over 10,000 runs, at an average of 67.46. He was a part of the Indian squad which won the 1988 Asia Cup.
You might not be knowing but In the Ranji Trophy, Sharma scored a record 31 centuries and his batting average of approximately 80 in the competition is second only to Vijay Merchant. Irrespective of having such great talent his cricketing career finished after a lifetime ban for match-fixing. However, in September 2014, Sharma was cleared from all charges related to match-fixing by Delhi district court and has asked the BCCI to allow him to take part in the board's activities and those of its associates.
3. Ajay Jadeja
On number 3, we have an Indian cricketer who has been known as one of the best cricket experts and mentor of Afghanistan Cricket team for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, who helped the Afghanistan team with his great knowledge in last year ICC event, where they defeated 2 test playing nations Pakistan and England in an ICC event for the first time.
This former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja, who was a regular member of the Indian cricket team in the One Day International (ODI) format between 1992 and 2000. He played 15 Test matches and 196 ODIs for India. Not only that! He was part of the Indian squad which won the 1995 Asia Cup.
This former Indian cricket player's career ended when he was booked lifetime by BCCI for match-fixing on 3 June 2000. However, The ban was later removed by the Delhi High Court on 27 January 2003, making Jadeja eligible to play domestic and international cricket.
