Rahul Dravid, a legendary figure in Indian cricket, experienced a tumultuous journey from player to coach, marked by significant highs and lows. He was part of the Indian team that faced a crushing defeat against Australia in the 2003 ODI World Cup final. His leadership during the 2007 World Cup was marred by disappointment, and he missed out on the 2011 triumph where India clinched its first World Cup in 28 years. Returning as the head coach, Dravid faced further challenges. India suffered heartbreak in the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final against England. This was followed by agonizing losses in the finals of the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup in 2023, both against Australia. Despite these setbacks, Dravid remained steadfast in his approach.
His perseverance bore fruit in 2024 when India secured victory in the T20 World Cup, marking Dravid's first major trophy as head coach. Aakash Chopra, a former cricketer, celebrated Dravid's success, highlighting India's consistency under his guidance. Despite the previous disappointments, Dravid's tenure saw India maintain their top ranking across all formats, culminating in a long-awaited triumph.
Chopra commended Dravid for providing stability and clarity to the team, underscoring his role in India's resurgence. Dravid's journey from a decorated player to a resilient coach mirrors his unwavering commitment to Indian cricket, finally achieving a pinnacle moment with the T20 World Cup victory in 2024.
“He started with under-19, remained with the India A team, and then came with this team. This team has reached the final of the last three ICC events and you won the Asia Cup. You reached the WTC final, the team remained consistently as No. 1, reached the ODI World Cup final, and won the T20 World Cup final,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
“Good things happen to good people. Your heart is satiated if such things happen. The team Rahul Dravid created has disintegrated slightly in this format because three retirements have come one after the other but he provided stability and clarity of thought,” he added.
Following Rahul Dravid's departure after the T20 World Cup, VVS Laxman steps in as the interim coach for India's upcoming series against Zimbabwe. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is poised to finalize the next head coach before India's series against Sri Lanka, commencing on July 27. Dravid's tenure concluded on a high note with India's T20 World Cup triumph, marking a significant chapter in his coaching career. Now, the focus shifts to identifying his successor to steer the team forward in the upcoming challenges, underlining the BCCI's strategic planning and commitment to maintaining continuity and excellence in Indian cricket leadership.
