In today’s article, we are going to talk about a player who has been sensational in international cricket since his debut for the Indian team in T20I format. He scored a hundred in his second match only after getting out on a duck in the 1st match of his career. Yes! We are talking about Abhishek Sharma, who scored a ton in the 2nd match of the 5-match series against Zimbabwe by smashing 8 monster sixes and 7 boundaries in 47 balls on a strike rate of more than 212.
Abhishek Sharma was born on September 4, 2000, in Amritsar to Raj Kuma Sharma and Manju Sharma. However, he completed his schooling at Delhi Public School in Delhi.
Domestic Career
The domestic career of a Southpaw batter started when he got elected into the Indian Under-15 team after doing magnificently at the district level, after which he got selected in Indian Under-16 team as a captain before making his debut for Punjab in Under 19 in Punjab in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy where he scored a century on his debut and finished the 2015–16 Vijay Merchant Trophy as the top run-getter with 1200 runs at an average of 109.09.
Apart from that, the 23-year-old cricketer led the Indian Under-19 team in a 2017 home Youth ODI series against England, which was won by India by 3-1. Meanwhile, in 2018-19, he participated in all of India's matches during the 2018 U19 Cricket World Cup and scored 50 runs against Bangladesh in the quarterfinal. After this, he and his U-19 teammate Shubman Gill earned their List-A debuts for Punjab on February 25, 2017, following their excellent World Cup achievements. He defeated Vidarbha in his debut by taking 2 wickets and scoring 46 runs.
After performing well in domestic and Indian Under 16, 19 tournaments, On October 6, 2019, he made his Punjab first-class debut against Himachal Pradesh, where he showed his prowess by hitting 94 runs in the first innings and taking 1 wicket overall.
IPL call-up
After making his name in domestic cricket and Under-19 cricket team, the left-hand batter was bought by Delhi Daredevils in the 2018 IPL auction for Rs 5.5 million. He didn't disappoint anyone and in his debut match, he scored 46 runs off 19 balls. Later, in February 2021, while playing for Punjab against Madhya Pradesh, he scored the fastest hundred by an Indian in List-A cricket, in 42 balls. But the turning point in his career came when he got picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise in February 2022, where he scored 426 runs in 14 matches.
Abhishek Sharma has been trained and guided by former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh from the start of his cricketing career, as he also represented Punjab team in domestic cricket before making his debut for the Indian team. Under, Yuvraj's Singh guidance and mentorship Abhishek Sharma batting technique improved as in IPL 2024, he scored the fastest fifty for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Mumbai Indians on 27 March 2024 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal.
The 2024 season of the Indian Premier League was one of the best seasons for the Southpaw batter as he was the second-highest run-getter for the Sunrisers Hydebad with 484 runs in 16 matches with an impressive strike rate of around 200. He also finished this year's IPL with 42 sixes and was the second-highest run-scorer for Sunrisers Hyderabad after Travis Head.
International Career
After performing well in the 17th edition of the IPL (Indian Premier League) and finishing with second highest-run scorer from the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise, the 23-year-old cricketer received his maiden international call-up for the 5-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. However, in his debut match on 6 July 2024, he got out on a duck before scoring his maiden T20I century in the second match against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club on 7 July.
Controversy
Abhishek Sharma was called by Surat Police in relation to a suicide case of Tanya Singh a model from Surat, whom he was dating before 2024. However, after her breakup, she committed suicide on 19th February 2024 at her house in the posh Happy Elegance Society in Vesu. However, the case is yet to be concluded in the court of law.
