Team India has an exciting schedule lined up ahead of them. The 2024 T20 World Cup winners recently wrapped up a T20I series against Zimbabwe with a 4-1 win. Now, the team is headed to Sri Lanka for a white-ball series. The white-ball squad has undergone a prominent transformation following the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the head coach. The plans for the Indian red-ball squad, however, are still under the wraps. India will head to Australia in November for the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Moreover, with the WTC Final scheduled for next year, all eyes will turn to Tests in the upcoming days. Amidst all of this, reports have emerged citing that fast bowler Arshdeep Singh is likely to win a place in the Indian red-ball squad for the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Arshdeep Singh Leading The Indian Test Squad Selection Race - Reports

According to reports, the Indian side is keen on including Arshdeep Singh in the Test team. The 25-year-old pacer displayed an exceptional performance for the team in their T20 World Cup campaign. Playing in all the matches, Singh emerged as India’s highest wicket-taker at the tournament. Moreover, Singh ended as the joint highest wicket-taker of the tournament along with Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi.

“Arshdeep has moved the ball impressively in white-ball matches for India. He could be asked to play a few domestic red-ball games, starting with the Duleep Trophy on September 5, to enhance his chances of selection for the Australia tour. There’s a real chance that he could be India’s trump card, along with (Jasprit) Bumrah, in Australia,” the reports read, as quoted by TOI.

The pacer scalped 17 wickets in 8 matches at an average of 12.64 with an economy of 7.16. Overall, Arshdeep Singh has played 52 T20Is, aggregating 79 wickets at an average of 19.10 and an economy of 8.39. Moreover, Singh also has a short but notable record in the ODIs. Playing in 5 ODIs for the team, Arshdeep has already registered a 5-wicket haul to his name. As for the stats, Singh has 10 ODI wickets, taken at an average of 18.40.

What's Ahead For India In Tests?

Team India, currently busy with the proceedings for the Sri Lanka Tour, has a thrilling Test series lined up at the end of 2024. The Men in Blue will travel to Australia for the Border Gavaskar Trophy ahead of the WTC Final. However, the team will engage in a red-ball series against Bangladesh and New Zealand in October at home.

Arshdeep Singh, moreover, is likely to feature in the Duleep Trophy ahead of his inclusion in the Indian red-ball squad. The new Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir, in his press conference ahead of the Sri Lanka series, stated that the youngsters need to perform consistently to uphold their position in the Indian squad. Thus, youngsters like Riyan Parag, Harshit Rana, and eventually Arshdeep Singh will need to display grit within their game to earn a longer run within the Indian team.
