The gap between the first and the second Test in the ongoing Border Gavaskar series stretched for 10 days. Both teams got ample time to think over their next plan of action. India had some much-needed practice, and Shubman Gill had enough time to make a full recovery from his thumb injury. However, the break, no matter how long, didn’t fade the memory of Mitchell Starc, where the 22-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal took a jibe at him in the opening Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. As soon as the ace seamer got his hands on the pink ball in Adelaide, Jaiswal was reminded of Starc’s bowling prowess.
Border Gavaskar Trophy: Jaiswal's jibe at Starc didn't age well
The concluding phase of the Perth Test was Jaiswal’s time to shine, as the young batter came through with his maiden century in Australia. With his form in full flow, the opener showed some boldness as he picked on Mitchell Starc. Jaiswal threw a "it’s coming too slow" at Starc without the Australian triggering him. Starc, while searching for a way to dismiss either KL Rahul or Jaiswal, couldn’t do anything but smile at the moment. However, it’s not in the nature of the mighty Australian to stay mum for long. If not with words, Starc replied with his skills as the second BGT Test began in Adelaide.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, playing his first Test with the brightly shining pink cherry, picked up a platinum duck in the second Border Gavaskar Trophy Test. Rohit Sharma, playing his first match in the five-match series, elected to bat first in the day-night encounter after winning the toss at the Adelaide Oval. Keeping faith in the opening duo who won the Perth Test, KL Rahul was sent to open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jaiswal took the strike as Mitchell Starc opened the attack for the Kangaroos. It didn’t take long for the seasoned pacer to trap the youngster lbw with a delivery that clocked 140 kph. While Jaiswal mulled over taking the review, a nudge from KL Rahul meant the youngster rightly departed to the dugout.

Shubman Gill, freshly recovered from his thumb injury, came in and stitched a patient partnership with KL Rahul. The Adelaide pitch, however, played in favor of the Kangaroos as Starc continued his assault. Luck favored KL Rahul early in the match. The batter first survived an edge against Scott Boland. Caught by the wicketkeeper, KL Rahul was already on his way back before it was revealed that Boland had overstepped the crease. Moreover, Rahul’s call to not ask for a review proved wrong as the snicko showed no movement when the ball went past his bat. Next, the batter was dropped by Usman Khawaja, leaving Boland reeling in frustration.
However, there was only so much luck the batter could enjoy. Finally, Rahul was dismissed in the 19th over against Mitchell Starc. McSweeney took a low catch at slip as Rahul failed to gauge the bounce, ending his knock at 37 (64).
Australia’s spell picked up pace from there as Mitchell Starc breathed fire on the Adelaide turf. The seamer dismissed Virat Kohli on the first delivery of the 21st over. Kohli once again fell to an edge, with Smith claiming the catch at second slip. Rohit sent Rishabh Pant ahead of himself following Kohli’s departure. However, the skipper had to join the attack soon after as Gill fell to Boland in the next over. It was an easy decision for Pant to advise Gill against the review as Boland trapped him in a plumb dismissal. At the end of the first session of the second Border Gavaskar Trophy Test, India was reduced to 82 for four, with Starc claiming three wickets and Boland, filling in for an injured Josh Hazlewood, drawing first blood by dismissing Gill for 31 (51).
