Australia’s quest to reclaim supremacy over India in Test cricket has been a long-standing challenge. The Aussies haven’t managed to secure a Test series victory against India in nearly a decade, a streak that has heightened the stakes for the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy, beginning on November 22. For the current generation of Australian cricketers, this series represents both a personal and collective milestone. Among the current squad, only seasoned campaigners Mitchell Starc, Steve Smith, Nathan Lyon, and Josh Hazlewood have tasted the glory of a Test series win over India, a feat achieved during the 2014-15 series. Their experience will be crucial as Australia aims to overcome a formidable Indian side on their home turf.

Meanwhile, other key players like Pat Cummins, Usman Khawaja, and Marnus Labuschagne remain eager to etch their names in the history books by securing their first Test series triumph against the Men in Blue. For players like Labuschagne, who has established himself as a mainstay in the batting lineup, and Cummins, leading the side as captain, this series presents an opportunity to make a defining impact. Khawaja, whose career has been rejuvenated in recent years, will also be determined to leave his mark. The hunger to break the drought and achieve this elusive milestone adds an extra layer of intensity to what promises to be a riveting series.
Australia has enjoyed remarkable success in recent years, cementing its status as one of cricket’s dominant forces. The Kangaroos clinched the T20 World Cup in 2022, followed by triumphs in the ICC World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup in 2023. They also retained the Ashes in a fiercely contested series on English soil. Despite these accolades, one significant achievement eludes them—a Test series win against India.
For Australia’s senior players, the upcoming Australia vs India Border Gavaskar Trophy is not just another contest; it is deeply personal. Veterans such as Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, and Josh Hazlewood were part of the team that faced consecutive home series defeats to India in 2018-19 and 2020-21. These losses marked historic moments in Indian cricket and left the Australians with a burning desire for redemption.
With the AUS vs IND five-match Test series set to begin on November 22, these seasoned campaigners are eager to turn the tide. For them, this represents not only a chance to avenge past defeats but also to solidify their legacy as one of Australia’s finest Test sides. Their desperation to leave a winning mark is matched by the hunger of emerging stars like Marnus Labuschagne and Nathan McSweeny, who see this as an opportunity to etch their names into the annals of Australian cricket history.
Australian captain Pat Cummins has set his sights on solidifying his team’s legacy by securing a victory in the highly anticipated five-match India vs Australia Border Gavaskar Trophy series. Acknowledging that defeating India in a Test series remains an unchecked box for many of his players, Cummins emphasized the significance of this challenge. He sees the series as an opportunity for his squad to etch their names into the history books and complete what has so far been an elusive achievement for this generation of Australian cricketers.
The skipper highlighted the unity and camaraderie within the team, noting that the players are in a relaxed mindset ahead of the series. With a settled core group of players who are well-versed in each other’s strengths and styles, Cummins believes the team is in prime condition to take on the formidable Indian side. He underlined the importance of maintaining composure and focusing on their preparation, which will be key to overcoming the formidable challenges posed by India on their home turf.
For Cummins and his teammates, this series is more than just a competition; it’s a chance to leave a lasting legacy in Australian cricket. With their recent triumphs in global tournaments, a Test series win in India would serve as the crowning glory, reinforcing their dominance and resilience across all formats of the game. The captain’s confidence and leadership will be pivotal as the team embarks on what promises to be an epic cricketing showdown.
“It's kind of one of the last things to tick off for a lot of us. Almost every challenge that we've had thrown with us over the last few years, we've stepped up and done well. To do that for another year, another home summer, would kind of cement this. Rather than just being a two or three-season thing, it's suddenly into a half-generation thing,” Cummins added.
“It's basically been the same side for the last two or three years. The week leading to is very normal. It's all very relaxed. Everyone knows how they need to prepare. One of the strengths of our team is not only the consistency, but how well everyone gets on and how much we love playing together,” he concluded.
