Can Rohit Sharma win the Orange Cap in IPL 2025?
It sounds really amusing that a talented and vastly experienced opening batsman like Rohit Sharma is yet to win the prestigious Orange Cap in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). While playing for the Indian team, Rohit has played a really different and explosive brand of cricket especially in the last three ICC tournaments namely ODI World Cup 2023, T20 World Cup 2024 and the recently concluded Champions Trophy 2025. The skipper has surely led his team from the front in penultimate matches which has helped India win two major ICC trophies in the space of around 9 months. However, Rohit has not managed to attain similar kind of form in the recent few years while opening the batting for Mumbai Indians (MI).
During the IPL 2024 season, Rohit Sharma managed to score a total of 417 runs from as many as 14 matches at a brilliant strike-rate of 150. On the other hand, the experienced Indian opener went on to smash an impressive tally of 257 runs in 8 games at an exceptional strike-rate of over 156 during the winning T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. While talking about the overall Rohit Sharma stats in IPL, the right-handed batter has notched up a total of 6628 runs from 257 games at a strike-rate of 131.15. He is the third highest run-getter in the IPL history after the duo of Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli.
Incidentally, Rohit Sharma started his IPL career in 2008 as a middle-order batsman for the Deccan Chargers before moving to the Mumbai Indians. He has played as many as 115 matches for MI in the middle-order which did not gave him much of opportunities to be in contention for the Orange Cap. However, during the last few years, he has played in the Indian Premier League as a specialist opening batter, but still he hasn't come even close in the list of leading run-getters during an IPL season.
Interestingly, Rohit experienced his best IPL season in 2013 when he composed a fantastic tally of 538 runs from as many as 19 matches and also captained the Mumbai Indians towards their maiden winning campaign. While talking about the upcoming IPL 2025 season, Rohit has the perfect opportunity to win the Orange Cap for the first time as there isn't a lot of pressure on his shoulders as he has already announced his retirement from T20I cricket. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians will be facing arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their IPL 2025 opener on 23 March, 2025 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
