Yashasvi Jaiswal

Captaincy aspirations or a rift: What led to Yashasvi Jaiswal's exit from Mumbai?

The ongoing IPL edition has hogged the majority of limelight in the cricketing scene right now, if not all. And yet, a certain update from domestic cricket has managed to make waves, thanks to the nature of the incident. Young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has left the Mumbai camp to join Goa in the domestics. Jaiswal's career kick-started and took off while in the Mumbai team, where his performance in first-class cricket paved his way to selection in the Indian team. However, the youngster seems to have moved on from the base. Now, whether it's just an aspiration for a leading role, one that Goa offered him, is the reason, or the muddle is deeper than it appears, is the query.

Reports reveal a rift between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ajinkya Rahane

While he plays in the IPL 2025 for Rajasthan Royals, Yashasvi Jaiswal confirmed his move from the Mumbai team to Goa in the domestic circuit. In his official statement, the cricketer confirmed that Goa offered him the captaincy, an offer that fits his aspirations for the future. For the unversed, Goa has moved up to the Elite category from the 2025-26 cycle. Moreover, with BCCI's stern commands for every player to dedicate time to domestic cricket, national players are ought to spend more time in the circuit than anticipated before.

"Goa has thrown me a new opportunity, and it has offered me a leadership role. My first goal will be to do well for India, and whenever I'm not on national duty, I will be playing for Goa and try to take them deep into the tournament," Jaiswal said following the official update.

However, for Jaiswal to chase a captaincy post at this stage of his career has confused many. The opening batter clearly ranks much lower in the pecking order when it comes to the captaincy race in the Indian team after Rohit Sharma. In fact, even in the IPL, when Sanju Samson recently marked his absence from captaincy duties, Riyan Parag eclipsed Jaiswal to hold the interim captaincy in the ongoing edition. Now, if reports are to be believed, Jaiswal's exit has more to do with a tussle with skipper Ajinkya Rahane and the management than just to hold a leading position in the other team.

A recent report talked about how an enraged Yashasvi Jaiswal kicked the kit bag of Rahane after a discussion. Jaiswal was reportedly questioned about his commitment to the team by the captain and the coach, Omkar Salvi. According to the report, Jaiswal had grown increasingly uncomfortable with the ongoing criticism surrounding his limited involvement in Mumbai’s domestic campaigns after becoming a regular in India’s Test XI.

Earlier this year, following the BCCI’s directive mandating centrally contracted players to turn out for their state teams when not on national duty, both Jaiswal and India captain Rohit Sharma featured in a crucial Ranji Trophy group-stage match against Jammu & Kashmir. Jaiswal endured a rough outing, getting out for zero in both innings as Mumbai slumped to an unexpected loss. Despite advancing to the semi-finals, Mumbai were dealt a blow when Jaiswal opted to return home just before their clash with Vidarbha. After their exit, Mumbai’s chief selector Sanjay Patil didn’t mince words.

“Our international players, when asked to play domestic cricket, simply marked their presence rather than committing themselves to the team. That deep-rooted culture of Mumbai cricket – where big names led by example – is clearly missing, and it’s something that urgently needs to change," the selector had remarked.
