1. Face-off between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir rocks IPL
It all started at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, with Gautam Gambhir having a verbal exchange with Moises Henriques after the two collided as Gambhir was going for a quick single. Later in the game, Gambhir and Virat Kohli had a go at each other and had to be physically separated by a third Delhi boy, Rajat Bhatia. Three years later, at the same venue, Yusuf Pathan and Andre Russell gave KKR a come-from-behind win, and Gambhir showed his emotions by kicking a chair in the dugout, an act for which he was fined 15% of his match fee. The rivalry between Virat Kohli and Gambhir was reignited in the previous season when RCB played against Lucknow Super Giants, whose mentor was Gambhir. However, this year, Kohli and Gambhir have resolved their conflict from last season, as they exchanged hugs and handshakes during the first innings of match 10 in the IPL 2024 season. Kohli has the most runs in IPL history as he has scored 7263 runs that includes 50 fifties and 7 centuries.
2. Harbhajan Singh vs Sreesanth in IPL 2008
On the back of a historic T20 World Cup win and the excitement of a franchise-based league, the maiden edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) witnessed one of the most talked about controversial incidents surrounding the Indian players. Harbhajan Singh and S Sreesanth, who were part of the Indian team winning the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup, were involved in an ugly fight following the IPL 2008 encounter between the Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab. The Mumbai Indians lost the league match against Kings XI Punjab, after which Harbhajan slapped Sreesanth just when both teams returned to their respective dugouts. Due to that controversial incident, the officials handed Harbhajan Singh a one-match ban. However, the legendary Indian off-spinner admitted that he regrets his actions in the past. Sreesanth also stated that he has no more hard feelings against the legendary Indian off-spinner. The Harbhajan Singh vs Sreesanth slap incident is one of the biggest Indian cricket controversies.
3. Sunil Gavaskar vs Kapil Dev - mother of all rivalries
Even though Indian fans believe that the 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev shared a cordial relationship with Sunil Gavaskar, who captained the World Cup-winning all-rounder several times, there's one incident that has been right there among the media circle and in the public eye. The biggest controversy involving Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev occurred in 1984 when the legendary all-rounder was dropped for the Kolkata Test match. India went on to win by 8 wickets against England. According to the Indian media, Kapil Dev was dropped from the Indian team for playing recklessly in the second Test in Delhi, which ultimately cost India the match. Gavaskar defended himself by saying Kapil Dev had been late for the selection committee meeting. In the subsequent match at Eden Gardens, the Indian fans started chanting "No Kapil, No Test" and attacked Gavaskar with rotten vegetables and fruits from the stands.
4. MS Dhoni vs Virender Sehwag - The 'rift' that rocked Indian cricket
The two legends of Indian cricket, MS Dhoni and Virender Sehwag, found themselves at opposite ends of a supposed 'rift', one of the biggest cricket updates spread by the media due to various reports between 2009 and 2012. Dhoni and Sehwag had been playing together for India since 2004, with Sehwag being Dhoni's senior in the India team. Sehwag was often the vice-captain of the side and a stand-in captain on occasion. Dhoni is one of the most loved and respected cricketers of all time. It is incredible that MS Dhoni is the only captain to win all three ICC events. He is also a five-time IPL-winning captain. When Dhoni was appointed captain in 2008, little did we know he would be the most successful Indian captain. Although there is no official proof, the two players reportedly avoided each other in Team India meetings on and off the field. When asked about dropping Virender Sehwag in an interview, Dhoni gave a shocking reply to the journalist that he would not say anything about that. After that, the Indian media and fans kept speculating about the events every now and then.
