Could IPL 2025 be the last season of MS Dhoni in the league?
Every year, the same speculation arises about whether this will be MS Dhoni’s last IPL season. So, does the lead-up to IPL 2025 differ from previous seasons as the question resurfaces yet again, will this be Dhoni’s final season in the league? While signs may point in a certain direction, it remains just that, speculation, until Dhoni confirms it himself. Chennai’s beloved "Thala", one of the most successful captains in IPL history, enjoys an unparalleled fan following. His continued presence in the tournament is met with nothing but joy from fans. However, there will eventually come a time when the inevitable happens, even if it leaves millions disheartened. So, could the 18th edition of IPL mark the bittersweet conclusion of his legendary career?
One Last Time: Would IPL 2025 mark the final stint of MS Dhoni?
MS Dhoni in yellow is one of the most cherished sights for cricket fans. But the reality is that the day is approaching when seeing Dhoni don the CSK jersey will become a memory. Season after season, predictions arise that the upcoming one will be his last. Yet, when Dhoni took the field for IPL 2024 after leading CSK to their fifth title in 2023, it took many by surprise. His retirement, which seemed almost certain after CSK’s perfect finish in 2023, never materialized, giving fans hope that his decision wasn’t necessarily tied to a fairytale ending. Now, as Dhoni and his fans prepare for IPL 2025, the age-old question still lingers.
Thala’s arrival in Chennai is always a grand spectacle, but his entry ahead of IPL 2025 sparked even more speculation. Dressed in a black T-shirt upon landing, Dhoni’s attire caught the internet’s attention. The Morse code printed on his shirt translated to "One Last Time." A straightforward interpretation would suggest that Dhoni is hinting at IPL 2025 being his swansong. However, whether this speculation turns into reality will only unfold in May this year, keeping fans on edge.
Despite extending his stint with CSK at the age of 43, Dhoni has ensured that his presence never hinders the team’s performance. While IPL 2023 did not mark the end of his playing career, it did conclude his illustrious captaincy tenure. With five IPL titles under his belt, Dhoni passed the leadership baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of IPL 2024. The young opener is now honing his leadership skills under the watchful eyes of the legendary wicketkeeper-batter.
Furthermore, the renowned finisher has moved lower in CSK’s batting order, allowing younger players to step up. When he does come out to bat, however, he ensures an impact. In IPL 2024, Dhoni averaged 53.67 and maintained a strike rate exceeding 200. Now, the question remains, will Dhoni’s age influence his retirement decision, or will another title-winning campaign for CSK provide the perfect ending to his unparalleled IPL legacy?
Recently, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh shared insights from a conversation with Dhoni regarding his future. Recalling their meeting at an event, Harbhajan revealed what keeps Dhoni going despite his age. According to him, it’s Dhoni’s sheer love for the game that keeps extending his IPL journey. Once that joy fades and the sport starts feeling like a burden, Dhoni will walk away, most likely in his signature style, without any fuss, grand farewell, or fanfare.
“I met him recently at a wedding function. He looked very fit and solid,” said Harbhajan. “I asked him, ‘Isn’t it hard, what you’re doing?’ He said, ‘It is hard, but this is the only thing I like doing. I enjoy it. As the clock ticks to 4 or 5 in the evening, I want to go and play. And I want to do it.’ So as long as you have that hunger inside, you will do it.”
