Ahead of the second Test against West Indies at Trent Bridge, Chris Woakes expressed his desire to emulate the careers of James Anderson and Stuart Broad, aiming to improve his performance in red-ball cricket as he ages. England captain Ben Stokes supports this ambition, emphasizing that Woakes possesses a strong record in home conditions but needs to enhance his overseas performance, where he averages 51.88. Woakes is eager to address this area of his game and develop further. Stokes highlighted Woakes' experience, which will be invaluable as the team looks to the future. He underscored the importance of Woakes stepping into a leadership role within the bowling unit, especially given his impressive track record as a Test cricketer. Stokes is confident that Woakes can take on additional responsibilities, contributing significantly to the team's success.
Woakes' commitment to improving and learning from his peers like Anderson and Broad is seen as a crucial factor in his development and the overall strength of the England bowling attack. As the series progresses, both players and management hope that Woakes will rise to the challenge, solidifying his place as a key figure in England's Test setup.
“I see it (James Anderson's retirement) as an opportunity for someone like Chris Woakes to take up the leadership role in the bowling unit. Woaksy is a very experienced bowler and player. We have been so used to Jimmy and Broady doing that. But we don't have them now. I see that as an opportunity for Woaksy. (Woakes has been) A phenomenal performer, especially in England, and great for him now to lead the attack,” England captain Ben Stokes was quoted as saying by India Today.
Despite retiring from international cricket after the first Test at Lord's, James Anderson has chosen to remain with the England team as a bowling consultant. Captain Ben Stokes believes this decision will greatly benefit the younger players. By having Anderson in this role, the emerging talent can gain invaluable insights from one of the game's greats, helping them refine their skills and enhance their understanding of the game.
Stokes highlighted the importance of mentorship in cricket, and having Anderson available to share his vast experience is seen as a tremendous opportunity for the squad. This arrangement allows younger bowlers to learn directly from Anderson’s extensive knowledge and techniques, which have made him one of the leading fast bowlers in Test history. Stokes is optimistic that this collaboration will not only aid in the development of individual players but also strengthen the team's overall performance moving forward. With Anderson’s presence, the young bowlers can expect to improve their strategies and adaptability on the field, contributing to the long-term success of the England bowling unit.
“The last few days have been really good. You can see that the lads are really desperate to pick his brains. Obviously, before that it was a bit different. Jimmy has always been preparing for his games, so it's about letting him do his stuff and pick his brains as much as you can, that felt appropriate. But now obviously he's just standing there and you can see lads drawn towards him wanting to pick his brains about what he thinks, how he holds certain deliveries,” Stokes added.
