Pakistan faced a heavy defeat in their opening game of the Champions Trophy 2025, losing to New Zealand by 60 runs at the National Stadium in Karachi. It was a disappointing performance from the Mohammad Rizwan-led side, as they failed to chase down a challenging target of 320 set by the Kiwis. Despite a spirited effort, Pakistan's batting line-up fell short, and the loss put them on the back foot in the early stages of the tournament. Adding to their woes, Pakistan have been dealing with a series of injuries that have already ruled out several key players from the competition. Unfortunately, the injury problems continued with another setback for the team. Fakhar Zaman, the left-handed opening batsman, sustained a lower back injury while fielding during the match against New Zealand.

His injury meant that he would be unavailable for the upcoming games, further depleting Pakistan's squad. Although Fakhar Zaman will not be seen on the field, he took to social media to express his unwavering support for the team. In a heartfelt post, he encouraged his teammates and promised to stand behind them as they regroup for the remaining matches in the tournament. His words served as a source of motivation for the team and the fans alike, as Pakistan hoped to bounce back from their opening defeat.

“Representing Pakistan on the biggest stage is an honor and dream of every cricketer in this country. I have been privileged enough to represent Pakistan multiple times with pride. Unfortunately, I’m now out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025 but surely Allah is the best planner. Grateful for the opportunity. I will be backing our boys in green from home. This is only just the beginning, the comeback will be stronger than the setback Pakistan Zindabad,” Fakhar wrote on X(Formerly known as Twitter).

After Fakhar Zaman’s injury in the opening match of the Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan's team management has made the decision to bring in Imam-ul-Haq as his replacement. The ICC's Event Technical Committee has approved this replacement, allowing Imam to make a return to the ODI format after a two-year hiatus. Imam’s record in ODIs has been impressive. In his 72 matches, he has accumulated 3,138 runs at an average of 48.27. His consistency is reflected in the 20 half-centuries and nine centuries he has scored in the format. With these strong numbers, Imam will be eager to make an impact and prove his worth in the ongoing tournament. This is an excellent opportunity for the 29-year-old to make a successful comeback to the international stage and strengthen Pakistan's top order, especially in the absence of Fakhar Zaman. As Pakistan looks to bounce back after their opening loss to New Zealand, Imam’s experience and solid track record will provide the team with valuable support in their quest to qualify for the semifinals.
