Though India has endured a disappointing run in the ongoing series, no one can deny that the Border Gavaskar Trophy has delivered the ultimate Test spectacle. From pacers dominating the proceedings to multiple centuries across the five matches, this edition has offered something for every cricket fan. A notable moment unfolded when Rishabh Pant came out to bat in the second innings of the Sydney Test, the final Border Gavaskar Trophy fixture. Pant's turn at the crease followed yet another swift collapse in the Indian top order, a scene that has become all too familiar. However, rising above the noise and chatter, Pant let his natural game shine as the SCG came alive with his swashbuckling strokes. Settling into his rhythm on Day 2, Pant scored one of the fastest fifties for India in the longer format at Sydney.
Rishabh Pant sets SCG ablaze with a fiery 29-ball Fifty in the last BGT Test
With two days completed, the Sydney Test is yet to fully unfold. However, regardless of the final outcome, India has already identified Rishabh Pant as the hero of the match. Over these two days, Pant has batted twice, showcasing two completely different styles of play. After drawing significant criticism for his flamboyant strokeplay throughout the four BGT Tests, Pant adopted a more subdued and defensive approach in the first innings. The result was a gritty knock of 40 runs, during which the wicketkeeper-batter endured multiple nasty body blows. Batting first at the SCG, India managed to score 185 runs, with Rishabh Pant emerging as the top scorer.
While the visitors put in a commendable effort with the ball, bundling Australia out for 181, the batters showed no signs of redemption. Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the second innings with a flurry of boundaries against Mitchell Starc. However, the momentum came crashing down when Scott Boland dismissed KL Rahul for 13. Rahul's dismissal in the eighth over triggered yet another collapse in the Indian batting order. Jaiswal departed for 22 in the 10th over, followed by Virat Kohli, who once again nicked an outside-off delivery from Boland in the 14th over. Pant walked in with India reeling at 59 for 3. Unlike the first innings, where he played defensively, Pant allowed his natural game to flow, treating the fans to some scintillating batting.
Pant began his innings with a six off Scott Boland, sending an early warning to Australia about his ability to clear the boundary with ease. What followed were moments of complete chaos for the Aussies, as the Indian batter fearlessly took on both Cummins and Starc. Even after Shubman Gill's dismissal, Pant showed no signs of slowing down, attacking Beau Webster with a hat-trick of fours. His aggressive approach propelled him to a half-century in just 29 balls at the SCG. The Indian batter hit six fours and three maximums to rush off to a swashbuckling half-century.
Fastest Fifty for India in Tests
Pant's half-century at the SCG in the final Border Gavaskar Trophy match is now recorded as the second fastest fifty for India in Tests. Interestingly, the top spot is also acquired by the "Spidey" of Indian cricket. The fastest fifty for India was hit by Pant back in 2022 when he reached the 50-run mark in only 28 balls against Sri Lanka at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Next in line is the legendary Kapil Dev who smashed 30-ball fifty against Pakistan in 1982 in Karachi. The remaining spots in the list of Fastest fifty for India in Tests are held by Shardul Thakur and the young Yashasvi Jaiswal.
