It would not be wrong to say one bowler who has impressed a lot in the ongoing ICC Men’S T20 World Cup 2024 with his incredible bowling is none other than Fazalhaq Farooqui, who has picked most wickets in the Marquee tournament and played a crucial role in helping his team to reach in the Super 8.
Fazalhaq Farooqui is an international cricketer from Afghanistan National Cricket team who is playing his second ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. But after looking at his current form and skills, he doesn’t look like a 23-year-old fast bowler. The Left-arm fast bowler has been in sensational form in the ongoing tournament, where he has picked a total of 15 wickets in 5 games with an efficient economy of 6.16 by conceding just 113 runs in his 18 overs of spell throughout the tournament.
However, the journey to becoming the leading wicket-taker for the Afghanistan’s left-hand fast bowler was not easy as before the start of the Marquee event, he was picked up in the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise for the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), but due to the presence of star-packed star bowlers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natrajan and Pat Cummins in the squad the Afghan cricketer didn’t get a chance to play a match of the season. Despite this, he didn’t lose belief in himself and kept waiting and practising in the nets for the right time, which came just after the conclusion of the IPL, in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, where he proved lethal with the new ball; he swings it both ways and can also nip it off the seam.
The Star pacer has been playing professional cricket since 2017 and is known for playing only white ball formats of international cricket, where he has been seen playing from various franchise league cricket including, the Indian Premier League, Caribbean Premier League and the Bangladesh Premier League, showcasing his skills and gaining valuable experience all around the world.
Domestic Cricket
On November 13, 2017, Farooqui made his First Class debut for Amo Region in the 2017–18 Ahmad Shah Abdali 4-day Tournament. Later, making his List A debut for the same team On, July 10, 2018, in the 2018 Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One-Day Tournament.
In December 2018, he was named in Afghanistan’s under-23 team for the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup. He made his Twenty20 debut on 14 October 2019, for Boost Defenders in the 2019 Shpageeza Cricket League.
International Career
The 23-year-old cricketer made his debut for the Afghanistan national team in a T20 match against Zimbabwe in March 2021, where he showcased his skills as a bowler and picked up two wickets. He continued to perform in the subsequent matches, which made him an important member of the Afghan cricket team.
After impressing everyone with his bowling skills in domestic and T20I matches, he made his ODI debut on 25 January 2022 against Netherlands at Abu Doha. Fazalhaq Farooqui has played a total of 32 ODI Matches so far, where he has taken 44 wickets by giving runs at an economy of 5.77.
Controversies
After coming into the news for allegations of harassing a female cricket staff, the Sydney Thunder ended Fazalhaq Farooqi’s Big Bash League (BBL) contract in December 2022 following a complaint about his behaviour.
Fazalhaq Farooqi is an inspiration for every cricketer in the world, who has fought through hardships and continued to believe in his skills, which made him one of the best bowlers from the Afghanistan national cricket team. It will be really interesting to see how the star bowlers will be taking his team forward in the Super 8 stage of the tournament.
After getting defeated by the Indian team in yesterday’s match, the Afghanistan team will be seen playing their next match against Australia on June 23, at Arnos Vale Stadium.
