In a significant setback for India, Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. The Indian fast bowler, who has been a vital part of India's bowling attack, has failed to make it into the final 15-member squad for the tournament due to a lower back injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially confirmed this decision in the late hours of Tuesday, February 11, adding that the injury had prevented Bumrah from recovering in time for the prestigious event. Bumrah’s absence comes as a major blow for India, as the 31-year-old pacer has been integral to the team's success in recent years, especially in white-ball cricket. The fast bowler has been battling back issues for a while, and despite undergoing rehab, he could not make it back to full fitness before the tournament.

Team India set to compete in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 without Jasprit Bumrah

The BCCI has made it clear that Bumrah’s rehabilitation process is being closely monitored, with the hope of him returning to action in the near future. India’s bowling attack, traditionally spearheaded by Bumrah, will now need to adjust in his absence. This news has left Indian fans and experts concerned about the team's pace options ahead of the Champions Trophy, with the focus now shifting to the backup players who will have to step up in Bumrah's place. The BCCI will likely make further announcements about a replacement or adjustments to the squad.

Jasprit Bumrah had initially been named in India’s provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, but his participation was always subject to his fitness. Unfortunately, due to a lingering back injury, Bumrah has not been able to recover in time for the tournament. His road to recovery has been slower than expected, particularly after he sustained a back spasm during the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy match against Australia in January. This injury forced Bumrah to leave the field during that game, and despite undergoing rehabilitation, he has not regained full fitness.

As a result, Harshit Rana, who made his ODI debut recently, has been named as Bumrah's replacement in the final 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy. Rana, a promising young pacer, will now have the opportunity to fill the void left by Bumrah's absence. While the loss of Bumrah is a significant blow to India’s pace attack, the team will be hopeful that Rana can step up and contribute effectively in the tournament. The BCCI’s decision to replace Bumrah with Rana highlights their commitment to ensuring India has strong pace options, even in Bumrah’s absence.

Harshit Rana made his international debut during the Border Gavaskar Trophy, where he impressed with his skills. Recently, he achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first Indian cricketer to take three wickets in each of his debut matches across all formats—Test, ODI, and T20I. This unique accomplishment highlights Rana's potential and adaptability in various formats of the game. His impressive performances in these debut matches have garnered attention, making him a promising prospect for India’s bowling attack. As he steps up to represent India on the big stage, his ability to make an impact across different formats suggests he could play a key role in the team’s pace attack moving forward.

Varun Chakravarthy, who made his ODI debut in the ongoing India vs England series, has been added to India’s final Champions Trophy squad as a last-minute inclusion. Chakravarthy's inclusion comes after his impressive performances in the recently concluded T20I series, where he claimed 14 wickets in five games. His exceptional spin bowling has earned him a spot in the squad, as the team looks to bolster their spin options ahead of the prestigious tournament.

On the other hand, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had been initially included, has been replaced by Chakravarthy and named as one of the non-travelling substitutes. Along with Jaiswal, Shivam Dube and Mohammed Siraj will also serve as non-travelling substitutes for the Champions Trophy. These players will remain on standby and travel to the United Arab Emirates if required, ensuring India has cover in case of injuries or changes to the squad. India's Champions Trophy campaign will kick off on February 20, with their first Group A match against Bangladesh. With a well-balanced squad featuring both experienced players and emerging talents, India will be looking to make a strong statement in the tournament.
