Mohammed Shami has been out from the Indian team since the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 due to an Ankle Injury for which he needs to undergo surgery expected to make a return for the Indian team in the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh. The Right-hand fast bowler was the leading wicket-taker for Men in Blue with 24 wickets in 7 matches having 5.24. Despite having an ankle injury, the 32-year-old performed exceptionally well throughout the tournament helping India in 10 continuous games before losing the final one against Australia at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

With this performance, he surpassed the record of most wickets by an Indian in a single edition of the World Cup, going past Zaheer Khan's tally of 21 in the 2011 Cricket World Cup. After his brilliant performance for the Indian team in the marquee event, the pace bowler was awarded the Arjuna Award by the president of India on January 9, 2024.

Mohammed Shami also underwent surgery for Achilles tendon and recently, returned to nets and started his bowling practice.  After ending the title drought of 17-long years in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 against South Africa, the Indian team will be ready for ICC World Test Championship which will be played in June 2025. In this process, the Indian team will clash against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia.

India will be starting their World Test Championship hurdle from Bangladesh where they will be playing 2 Test Matches. In this tour, the Indian team management can be seen adding the star Indian pacer Mohammed Shami back after being out from the team due to an ankle injury, as he is currently in the final stages of rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. He resumed bowling last month for the first time since his surgery and has gradually increased his bowling workload, reporting no pain.

Team  Before their departure, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and newly-appointed head coach Gautam Gambhir held a press conference.

Ajit Agarkar stated as quoted by ESPNcricinfo, "We more or less know who the guys are, there are some injuries at the moment and hope they will be back up. Shami has started to bowl which is a good sign. September 19 is the first Test and that was always the goal. I don't know if that is his timeline for recovery, will have to ask the guys at the NCA about that."

Going further, Agarkar also talked about the importance of depth in the fast bowling department given the packed Test schedule ahead.

He said, "There are so many Tests coming. We will need some depth. Bumrah, Shami, and Siraj have been around for a while, these are the obvious ones. But there will be some conversation around it. Got a lot of first-class cricket coming up so we can build guys up like that."
