The ICC Champions Trophy is slated to commence in February next year. With the marquee tournament swiftly approaching, Pakistan is immersed in the preparations to host the championship. The PCB has put major grounds in reconstruction in their bid to ensure a smooth and unparalleled run of the Champions Trophy. However, the Pakistan board still awaits the confirmation of India on their plans to visit the country next year. The political tensions between the neighbouring countries aren't hidden by anyone. Thus, India is apprehensive to visit Pakistan citing safety issues for the players and the support staff. Joining in the debate on India’s stance on the upcoming event, former Pakistan skipper Moin Khan has advised the Indian Cricket Board to keep sports and politics apart as he invites India to join the proceedings in Pakistan.
Former Pakistan skipper speaks on India's plans to visit Pakistan for ICC Cham[ions Trophy
While Pakistan recently visited India for the 2023 ODI World Cup, India last stepped in Pakistan in 2008 for the Asia Cup. The BCCI is yet to confirm about India’s plan on the Champions Trophy, though the chances of that happening seem unlikely at this point. While the debacle continues, ICC Chief Executive Geoff Allardice recently confirmed that the Council is firm on their decision to keep the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Amidst all the chaos surrounding the Champions Trophy, former Pakistani cricketer Moin Khan has called for India to visit Pakistan for the event positively.
“India must honour ICC commitments, and if they don't, Pakistan should also consider taking a stand by not participating in future tournaments in India," Moin Khan said. “In my view, Indian cricket legends should advise the BCCI to keep sports separate from politics. Fans worldwide want India and Pakistan to play, benefiting not just Pakistan but the sport as a whole,” he added.
Earlier, the BCCI, headed by Jay Shah declared that any decision on Team India visiting Pakistan will be approved by the Indian government. A lot has changed since then, The then BCCI chief is now the ICC Chairmanship. Jay Shah will assume the chairmanship of ICC in December 2024, days before the Champions Trophy is scheduled to start. While Pakistan continues its preparation for the ICC event, all eyes now rest on BCCI for a concrete decision.
