In today’s article, we are going to read about an Indian cricketer who has got cricket in her blood from his father. Despite playing cricket with Men in her initial days, she never lost belief in his ability and became one of the best batters. This girl not only broke the shackles that were used to cage every girl who used to dream differently but also became an inspiration for aspiring women cricketers.
Yes! We are talking about Indian Women's Cricket team captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, who is currently leading the team in the 9th event of the Women’s Asia Cup T20, which is happening in Sri Lanka. Under her leadership, the Indian team has reached the Semi-finals of the marquee event with the remaining undefeated team.
Harmanpreet Kaur was born on 8 March 1989 in Moga, Punjab, to Harmandar Singh Bhullar, a volleyball and basketball player and Satwinder Kaur, a homemaker. Her younger sister Hemjeet, is a post-graduate in English and works as an assistant professor at Guru Nanak College in Moga.
You might not know but Kaur got cricket from his father who was once an aspiring cricketer before working as a clerk at a judicial court. He was the first coach of Harman when she had begun playing the sport. She took to cricket after joining the Gian Jyoti School Academy, 30 kilometres (19 mi) away from her residence in Moga, where she trained under Kamaldeesh Singh Sodhi.
To follow her passion and get proper training, she moved to Mumbai in 2014 where she began working for the Indian Railways. Harmanpreet was inspired by former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag.
Controversies
The Indian captain was caught up in a huge controversy when she was given an honorary appointment there as a deputy superintendent of police. However, she was found using fake records for her graduation as an investigation by university officials found no records of her enrollment.
Some people have said that she has claimed to have obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh and other reports show that she actually studied at the Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya College (of the Guru Nanak Dev University) in Jalandhar, Punjab.
International career
In 2009, She made her ODI debut at age 20 in a match against Pakistan women's team played at Bradman Oval during the World Cup, where he took his maiden wicket of Pakistan batter Amran Khan in his 4 overs spell.
A few months later, she made her T20I debut in the ICC Women's World Twenty20 against England women's team at County Ground, Taunton, where she scored just 8 runs off 7 balls. However, she showed his prowess in batting against England where he scored a blistering knock of 33 runs. Despite being a hard-hitting batter, she is a great captain which she showed when he got the chance to lead on 2012 Asia Cup after captain Mithali Raj and Vice-captain Jhulan Goswami got injured just before the finals against arch-rivals Pakistan. She not only handled the pressure perfectly but also made the Indian team win by 81 runs.
After leading the Indian team to victory in the Asia Cup, she was announced as the captain of the series against Bangladesh. During this series, she not just led India to victory, but also scored her second ODI century in the 2nd ODI. Kaur finished the series 195 runs at an average of 97.50 with a century and a fifty, along with 2 wickets.
The Indian captain became a global sensation when she became the first Indian cricketer to be signed by an overseas Twenty20 franchise. Sydney Thunder, the Women's Big Bash League champions, signed her for the 2016–17 season.
On 20 July 2017, she scored 171*(115) against Australia in the 2017 Women's Cricket World Cup semi-final in Derby. Under Haramanpreet Kaur’s captaincy, India Women’s team reached the finals of Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2017. However, they lost against England, but his leadership skills were appreciated by everyone.
