In a Saturday night blockbuster event, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) secured a massive win over the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to qualify for the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) playoffs. During his post-match speech in the RCB's Dressing Room Masterclass on Saturday, Dinesh Karthik said that the 110m six by legendary Indian wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni in the last over of the match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings, which landed outside the ground in Cubbon Park, was the best thing to happen. RCB defended the 219-run target and kept CSK's score under 200, securing their sixth win in a row and qualifying for the IPL 2024 playoffs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Dinesh Karthik reveals how MS Dhoni's 110m six helped RCB qualify
Despite the intense pressure resembling an IPL knockout game, RCB remained composed and outplayed MS Dhoni's CSK to secure the win and an IPL 2024 playoffs berth. Star RCB wicketkeeper batter Dinesh Karthik highlighted an interesting observation during their win against five-time IPL champions CSK. As the match approached its thrilling climax, Thala Dhoni launched a fierce onslaught against RCB at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. In the decisive final over, CSK needed 17 runs to qualify, with Yash Dayal bowling the final over.
All eyes were on Yash Dayal as he once failed to defend 29 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2023 while playing for Gujarat Titans (GT). Rinku Singh smashed Dayal and won the game for KKR back then. Yash Dayal went through a tough time after that match. He was released by GT but was picked up by RCB this season. In the crucial game, Faf du Plessis backed Yash Dayal to bowl against MS Dhoni in the last over.
"I think the best thing to happen today was Dhoni hitting that six outside the ground, so we got a new ball, which was much better to bowl with," Dinesh Karthik said in a video released by RCB.
Due to the rain, the ball was damp, posing a challenge for Yash Dayal. His first delivery of the last over slipped from his grip, resulting in a full toss that Thala Dhoni capitalized on, smashing a massive 110-meter six. With the wet ball replaced by a dry one, Dayal went back to his plans for the next delivery, opting for a slower ball, deceiving Dhoni off guard completely. Dhoni mistimed his shot, resulting in a mishit and ultimately giving away his wicket. Yash Dayal found redemption.
"Yash, that was good bowling. When in doubt, always bowl a hip-high full toss on leg stump. Wherever he is, it’s a good mantra to follow when the ball is wet," Karthik joked.
RCB defended the 219-run target and kept CSK's score under 200, securing their sixth win in a row and qualifying for the IPL 2024 playoffs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The 38-year-old wicketkeeper lauded the team for its historic comeback to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs after being down to seven losses in the first eight matches of the season. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru will face either Sunrisers Hyderabad or Rajasthan Royals in the eliminator at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 22.
