The first-ever Border Gavaskar Trophy was played in 1996-97 season with India as the hosts. Interestingly, Team India managed to win the three-match IND vs AUS Test series by a 1-0 margin with the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar captaining the hosts against the Mark Taylor-led Australian team. Former wicket-keeper batsman Nayan Mongia was the Player of the Series.
While talking about the one of the famous Border Gavaskar Trophy wins, the 2004/05 Test series victory by Australia cannot be missed. Under the captincy of legendary wicket-keeper batsman Adam Gilchrist, Australia toured India in 2004 for a four-match Test series. The visiting Australian team had a fabulous start in this IND vs AUS series with a massive 217-run victory over India in the first Test match in Bengaluru. The India vs Australia second Test match in Chennai ended in a draw as leg-spinner Anil Kumble managed to pick as many as 13 wickets in the game. On the back of Damien Martyn's staggering performance in both the innings, Australia went on to pick up another emphatic 342-run win against India in the third Test match hosted in Nagpur and this victory also helped the visitors win their first-ever Border Gavaskar Trophy in India. Although, India fought well for their pride and managed to win the fourth and final Test match of the series by 13 runs in Mumbai.
On the other hand, India's famous Test series win Down Under came in the 2020/21 season which definitely has to be labelled as the series victory for the ages. The Australia vs India four-match Test series started with the first Test match being a day-night fixture hosted at the Adelaide Oval. The visiting Indian team suffered a humiliating 8-wicket loss where they were bowled out for 36 runs in the second runs and this was their lowest score in Test cricket. The then Indian captain Virat Kohli had to leave the Test series midway due to the birth of his first child and Ajinkya Rahane took over the captaincy duties for the remaining three games. Rahane led the team from the front with an exceptional hundred in the iconic Boxing Day Test match and India managed to level the series 1-1 with a smashing 8-wicket win.
The AUS vs IND third Test match in Sydney ended in a thrilling draw as the Indian duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Hanuma Vihari batted courageously against a quality Aussie bowling attack in some challenging conditions. With the series levelled at 1-1, things were poised to get really interesting and exciting in the final Test match to be hosted at The Gabba in Brisbane where Australia were yet to lose a Test match in the last 32 years. While riding on wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant's remarkable unbeaten knock of 89 runs in the fourth innings, India registered a historic 3-wicket victory over Australia and managed to claim back-to-back Test series win Down Under.
