After Rahul Dravid’s tenure as India’s head coach ended with lifting the World Cup trophy in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has announced former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Men in Blue from the Sri Lanka series to 2027 ODI World Cup. It marked Gautam Gambhir's entry into the Indian team after a long wait of 8 years. Under Rahul Dravid's tenure, the Indian team has performed brilliantly, especially in ICC events, where they have played finals 3 times and won on 1 occasion in T20 World Cup 2024. However, it will be interesting to see how the Indian team performed under the guidance of legendary cricketers.
Gautam Gambhir has represented the Indian cricket team from 2004 to 2016 in international cricket, where he has scored more than 10,000 runs in three formats with 20 hundreds to his name. Gambhir was part of 2 World Cup wins, which India won in 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ICC Men's ODI World Cup and in both final matches, he played a match-winning knock, weather it was 75 against arch-rivals in finals or 97 runs against Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium, he has been an unsung hero of the Indian cricket team.
Apart from being an international cricketer, the Southpaw batter also served the country as a Member of Parliament from East Delhi after he retired from cricket with BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party). However, before the start of 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he decided to step down from active politics and said that he wanted to focus on his upcoming cricket commitments. Nevertheless, the Delhi-born boy thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for giving him a chance to serve the people.
The 42-year-old cricketer has been on the list of players, who have a passion for the game and a love for the country, which we have seen several times through his patriotic remarks on nation. It is also one of the reasons that BCCI, have gone with Gambhir to drive his passion and love for the country on an international stage.
Despite being known as an angry man on the field, the left-hand batter has a great record while guiding team as a head coach or as a mentor for different franchises, where he joined hands with LSG (Lucknow Super Giants) as a mentor and helped them to reach into their first playoffs in their debut season of Indian Premier League before coming back to his old franchise (KKR) Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024 as a head coach and ending the title drought of 10 long years by winning the 17th edition.
With these records, no doubt! Gambhir is the right choice for the head coach of the Indian cricket team, where he will be heading Men in Blue in 5 ICC events in his tenure of 3 years.
Throwing light on Gambhir's appointment as a head coach for the Indian team, BCCI Chief Secretary Jay Shah congratulated and welcomed him with a special tweet on X.
"It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr @GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward. His clear vision for #TeamIndia, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. The @BCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey,"
The Former Indian cricketer will be taking charge of the Indian team from the Sri Lanka series, which will start after the Zimbabwe tour, where Men in Blue will be playing 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs, starting from July 27th to August 7.
