"I don't think it's s**t or bust quite yet" - Jos Buttler ahead of do-or-die clash against Oman
Defending champions England are on the verge of potential elimination from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. They have to defeat Oman and Namibia by a huge margin to advance to the Super Eight stage. Ahead of their third group match in Antigua, skipper Jos Buttler emphasized that his team is not too nervous about dominating Oman but aims to secure a victory to stay in the competition. The keeper-batter mentioned that the team is aware of the current scenario and has clear plans on what needs to be done.
"I don't think it's s**t or bust quite yet. I think it's quite clear what we need to do and how we need to play. First and foremost, we need to win the game against Oman to have any chance going forward into the next one. So we have to earn the right to try and win the game. And if we can get ourselves in a position to affect our net run-rate, obviously that's what we need to do," Jos Buttler said.
Jos Buttler also clarified that he is not feeling the heat and he cares more about the people in the dressing room than those outside. England did not perform well in the 2023 ODI World Cup, and an early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024 could jeopardize Buttler's captaincy future. Talking about the Super Eight qualification scenario, England is currently 4th in the Group B points table with a Net Run Rate (NRR) of -1.800.
"That's the situation we find ourselves in, so we have to be aware of that but not be consumed by it. If we try and do that bit first, forget about trying to win the game and lose, then you've got no chance anyway. I'd rather have some kind of chance going into the last game and know exactly what we need to do," Buttler added.
Two-time T20 World Champions England have two matches remaining against Oman on June 13 and Namibia on June 15. Scotland's NRR is +2.164, and they will face Australia in the final group match on June 16. Although England is in trouble now, they can still qualify for the Super Eights with a bit of help from their arch-rivals Australia.
