On the back of a stunning five-wicket haul from mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, Team India have registered a sensational 44-run victory over New Zealand in the ongoing edition of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. With this win, the Men in Blue have now claimed the top position in the Group A of this 50-overs tournament. India will be playing their crucial semi-final encounter against Australia on 4 March, 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai.

India vs New Zealand: Kiwi pacers crush India's top-order

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first on a tricky Dubai pitch, New Zealand's new ball pair of Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson gave their team a dream start. Henry first bowled a wonderful delivery to get rid of India's in-form vice-captain Shubman Gill with just 15 runs on the scoreboard. Jamieson then removed Indian captain Rohit Sharma to put India on the backfoot. New Zealand's Glenn Phillips showed his brilliance in the field by taking an exceptional catch to send back Virat Kohli and leave India in a deep trouble at 30 for 3 after 6.4 overs.

Iyer, Axar and Hardik combine together to help India reach a par score

The duo of Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel combined together to bail India out of the troublesome situation with an impressive partnership of 98 runs for the fourth wicket. While being promoted up the batting order, Axar played a crucial knock of 42 runs while Iyer showed his class with a brilliant innings of 79 runs off 98 deliveries that included 4 fours and 2 sixes. Towards the end, Hardik Pandya smashed 45 runs to help India achieve a par score of 249 for 9 in their quota of 50 overs. For New Zealand, Henry bowled really well picking up a phenomenal five-wicket haul.

Chakravarthy shines on Champions Trophy debut as Williamson's 81 goes in vain

Hardik removed New Zealand opener Rachin Ravindra early in the run-chase to provide his team with the opening breakthrough. Indian spinners, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy and Ravindra Jadeja then trapped the opposition batters completely in their web during the middle-overs phase. However, former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson batted amazingly well at the other end, rotating the strike and also got the boundaries going. Williamson also fell into the trap as Axar got his prized scalp after scoring 81 runs off 120 deliveries. While making his Champions Trophy debut, Chakravarthy bowled staggeringly well and picked up his maiden ODI fifer as New Zealand got bowled out for 205 runs in 45.3 overs.
