Virat Kohli once again proved his reputation as a chase master during India’s semi-final victory over Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, guiding his team to a spot in the final. Kohli’s composed knock of 84 runs played a crucial role in ensuring India chased down the 265-run target set by Steven Smith’s Australia with relative ease. While 20 of his runs came off the five boundaries he struck, it was his astute rotation of the strike and quick running between the wickets that made the difference, as India moved steadily towards the target. After the match, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir was asked about the atmosphere in the dressing room when Kohli is batting during a run chase. His response came as a surprise to many.

Virat Kohli special helps India qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 finals

Gambhir emphasized that the feeling in the dressing room isn’t any different when Virat Kohli is at the crease compared to other players. He stressed that every batter in the team holds equal importance, highlighting the collective effort of the team rather than focusing solely on one individual. Gambhir’s comments reflect a strong team-oriented mentality, where everyone’s contribution is valued, and each player plays a vital role in achieving the team's ultimate goal. Kohli’s brilliance in the chase, however, undoubtedly remained a key factor in India's successful pursuit of the target.

“Buddy, when you play 300 games, you will end up getting out to some of the spinners. So that’s okay, he’s got a hundred in this competition, he’s got an 80 in this competition. When you’ve got runs in this competition, you will eventually get out to some kind of a bowler. So, rather than dissecting and bisecting that he’s got out to leg spin. I think when you play 300 ODIs you will eventually get out to a certain kind of bowler and that’s okay,” said India head coach Gautam Gambhir in the post-match presentation.

Virat Kohli has been in excellent form throughout the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, amassing 217 runs from four innings at an impressive average of 72.33 and a strike rate of 83.14. One of his standout performances came in India’s second fixture against Pakistan, where Kohli scored a magnificent century, leading India to successfully chase down 242 runs. His controlled yet aggressive batting proved to be a key factor in India’s victory, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.

As India heads into the finals of the tournament, Kohli will be eager to continue his fine run of form. With the final in sight, he will look to produce another match-winning knock and help India secure their third Champions Trophy title. Given his consistency and ability to thrive in high-stakes situations, Kohli’s presence in the middle will be vital for India’s chances in the final. His track record and hunger for success make him a formidable force, and fans will be hoping he can carry his excellent form into the upcoming fixtures to help India achieve glory once again.

"It feels exactly the same whoever is there in the middle. Everyone is important. It feels exactly the same whether it is Virat in the middle or anyone else. Ultimately, it is about playing for the country. When you are representing your country, everyone is important," added Gambhir.

Virat Kohli’s career against spinners has seen mixed results, having been dismissed by them 77 times in his ODI career at an average of 44.58. However, in recent times, Kohli has faced some challenges, particularly against leg spin. One notable bowler who has troubled him is England’s Adil Rashid, who has dismissed Kohli five times in ODIs. Despite this, Kohli has been able to maintain a solid record against spinners overall, with his quick adjustments and adaptability.

In the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Kohli has been in sensational form, proving his ability to shine in high-pressure tournaments. Currently, he stands as the third-highest run-scorer in the competition, further solidifying his status as one of the best batsmen in world cricket. His consistency and determination are evident as he continues to perform at the highest level. Kohli’s recent form in the tournament demonstrates his readiness to face challenges and adapt his game, especially as he prepares for the crucial matches ahead. Fans and experts alike will be eager to see how he continues to play in the upcoming fixtures, as he remains a key player in India’s quest for Champions Trophy glory.
