Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin has expressed his belief that India stands a strong chance of winning the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy if Rohit Sharma maintains his current form. Rohit, who had been struggling for runs across all formats in recent months, made a spectacular return to form during the second ODI against England in Cuttack, where he scored a blistering 32nd career century. Before this impressive knock, the Indian skipper had been going through a rough patch, managing just 166 runs in his previous 16 outings, which raised concerns about his form.

Rohit Sharma back in form is a big positive ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025

Rohit’s century came in just 76 balls, as he powered his way to 113 runs, smashing 12 boundaries and 7 sixes along the way. His explosive innings played a key role in India’s four-wicket victory over England, helping the team chase down a challenging target. The knock was a timely reminder of Rohit’s ability to dominate at the highest level, especially with the Champions Trophy just around the corner. Azharuddin, speaking to PTI, praised Rohit for his remarkable comeback and highlighted that the timing of his return to form couldn’t have been better. With the Champions Trophy fast approaching, Azharuddin extended his best wishes to Rohit Sharma, hoping that he would carry his form into the tournament and lead India to success on the global stage.

“Best wishes to Rohit Sharma for a successful Champions Trophy. If he performs well in the tournament, I have no doubt that India will emerge victorious. His return to form has come at the perfect time,” stated former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin in a recent interview.

During the match, Rohit Sharma achieved another remarkable feat by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs as an opener for India across all formats. This milestone added another feather to Rohit’s already illustrious career, further solidifying his position as one of the best openers in modern cricket. Azharuddin lauded Rohit’s perseverance and mental strength, noting that despite enduring a prolonged period of poor form, he never gave up and continued to push himself. Rohit’s determination to overcome his struggles and return to form, especially in such a crucial match, highlighted his resilience and commitment to the team.

Azharuddin also congratulated Rohit on breaking Tendulkar’s long-standing record, acknowledging the significance of the achievement. Tendulkar, widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers of all time, set a high benchmark for Indian openers, and Rohit’s accomplishment in surpassing his tally is a testament to his skill and consistency at the top level. Azharuddin’s praise not only recognized Rohit’s personal achievements but also reflected the belief that the Indian captain’s form could play a pivotal role in India’s success in the upcoming Champions Trophy.

“He is a phenomenal player who never gave up, even during tough times with the bat. From what I heard, he played exceptionally well yesterday. Records are meant to be broken, and I congratulate him on surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s milestone. I hope he continues this form and excels in the Champions Trophy,” Azharuddin added.

Amid growing criticism and speculation about his place in the team, some had even suggested that Rohit Sharma consider retirement. Despite the doubts surrounding his form, former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin emphasized that such a decision ultimately lies with Rohit himself. Azharuddin pointed out that Rohit is the best judge of his own abilities and understands the physical and mental demands of the game better than anyone else.

Rohit’s recent return to form, highlighted by his century against England, has quelled some of the criticism, but he still faces pressure to maintain his consistency. India’s final ODI of the series against England, scheduled for February 12 in Ahmedabad, offers Rohit one last chance to solidify his form before leading the team into the Champions Trophy in Dubai. The match will serve as an important opportunity for the Indian captain to find his rhythm and head into the prestigious tournament with confidence. India’s Champions Trophy campaign will begin against Bangladesh, and Rohit’s leadership and form will be crucial for the team’s success. With the tournament just around the corner, all eyes will be on Rohit to ensure he is ready to lead from the front in India’s pursuit of glory.
