India Women suffered a major blow right as they kicked off their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign. The Women in Blue began their tournament with a clash against New Zealand Women. Coming off their worst losing streak in the format, the Kiwis redeemed themselves in the opening match. India Women sustained a 53-run defeat, casting a cloud over their path forward in the marquee tournament. India went on to win their next match, beating arch-rivals Pakistan Women by 6 wickets. However, the win was not significant enough to boost India’s net run rate by the desired margin. As a result, India’s chances for semi-final qualification now depend on the outcomes of other group stage matches.
Australia women thrash New Zealand women at the ICC Women's T20 World Cup
Defending champions Australia faced New Zealand in both teams' second match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Looking to maintain their winning streak, the game featured an impressive bowling display at Sharjah. However, in the second innings, it became clear that the Kiwis had little chance against the Australians. Australia thrashed New Zealand to secure a 60-run victory in their second game of the event. As a result, New Zealand's net run rate, which was previously boosted by their 53-run win over India, plummeted after Tuesday’s match.
Alyssa Healy-led Australia opted to bat first against New Zealand at Sharjah. The White Ferns delivered a strong bowling performance as Amelia Kerr triggered a collapse in the 13th over of the first innings. The ace all-rounder dismissed Ellyse Perry and Grace Harris on consecutive deliveries, eventually restricting Australia to a 148-run total. However, New Zealand couldn't hold their own against the Australian bowling attack led by Megan Schutt. The defending champions reduced the Kiwis to 6 runs for 5 wickets. The only noteworthy partnership for New Zealand came from Kerr and Suzie Bates, who put together a 47-run stand. However, the team eventually folded for just 88 runs.
India Women gain an edge at WT20 WC semi-final qualification following New Zealand's defeat
As India Women prepare for their third group stage match, New Zealand’s heavy defeat has emerged as a positive for the Women in Blue. Following the conclusion of the Australia vs New Zealand match, New Zealand now occupies third place in the points table. Australia sits atop Group A with a net run rate of +2.5, while Pakistan is currently in second, having won one of their two matches so far.
India Women now sit in fourth place in the group rankings with a net run rate of -1.21, while Sri Lanka women is last. With New Zealand’s defeat to Australia, the net run rate gap between India and New Zealand has narrowed. If India can secure a win against Sri Lanka, they will have a better chance at advancing. However, if India women lose to Australia, their qualification hopes will depend on New Zealand winning just one of their remaining games. New Zealand’s next opponents are Sri Lanka Women and Pakistan Women.
ICC Women's T20 World Cup: Qualification scenarios for India Women
The straight path for India women for ICC Women's T20 World Cup semi-final qualification will be to win their remaining matches. After their clash with Sri Lanka Women, India will face Australia Women in their final group stage fixture. Against Sri Lanka, India will look to avenge their Asia Cup final defeat from earlier this year. Sri Lanka Women have lost both of their T20 World Cup matches so far. They opened their campaign with a 31-run defeat against Pakistan Women, followed by a 6-wicket loss to Australia Women in their next match.
If both India and New Zealand lose one of their remaining two matches, India’s qualification will depend on having a superior net run rate, assuming they finish level on points. However, if India wins both of their remaining matches and New Zealand loses one, net run rate will no longer be a concern for India.
Pakistan is also in a strong position for qualification. Currently second, with the same number of points as India and New Zealand, Pakistan has an advantage with a better net run rate (+0.555). However, India’s chances seem stronger given that Pakistan's next opponents are New Zealand Women and unbeaten Australia Women.
