The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the 15-member India T20 squad for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and USA. As previously revealed by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, Rohit Sharma will captain the Indian cricket team, while seam-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya will be his deputy. A funny trend emerged after India's T20 World Cup squad was announced. Several players in that 15-member India squad began going through a poor phase in IPL 2024. Hardik Pandya, Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube scored ducks, while Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, and Suryakumar Yadav fell cheaply. Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh leaked over 50 runs each in the games that followed the squad announcement. Only Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jasprit Bumrah have been in form to some extent. In a massive boost for the Men in Blue, Suryakumar Yadav unfurled his scintillating, vintage 100-run knock against Sunrisers Hyderabad, putting to bed all kinds of questions about his form heading into the T20 World Cup 2024. In this blog, we take a look at all Indian cricket players' performances leading into the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
India cricket players' performances leading into the ICC T20 World Cup 2024
1. Rohit Sharma (C)
Indian captain Rohit Sharma has been among the cricket updates ever since he got replaced by Hardik Pandya as Mumbai captain after the 2023 ODI World Cup. In 12 matches so far in the IPL 2024 season, former Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma has scored 330 runs, striking at 152.78. Since India’s T20 World Cup squad was announced on April 30, the Indian captain's poor scores continued even on Monday against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Hitman has been unable to fire in the tournament recently, which has added to MI's inconsistent show so far. Though he scored a ton against arch-rivals CSK in a losing cause, Rohit's form has been on a downward trajectory since then. Rohit has scored only 33 runs in the last five matches with four single-digit scores (4, 11, 4, 8, 6).
2. Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli has continued his sublime form throughout the IPL 2024 season. The star opener for Royal Challengers Bengaluru slammed 42 from 27 balls to answer the ‘strike-rate’ critics in style. Kohli, who is one of the 6 Indians to have won the IPL Orange Cap, currently tops the IPL 2024 most runs scored charts with 542 runs from 11 games at an average of 67.756 and a strike rate of 148. The veteran batter has hit four half-centuries and a century in the IPL 2024 season. The 35-year-old modern-day legend is also a part of India's squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, to be held in the United States and West Indies. However, it still remains a question whether King Kohli will be opening the batting alongside Rohit Sharma or taking the number 3 position.
3. Suryakumar Yadav
In a massive boost for the Men in Blue, Suryakumar Yadav unfurled his scintillating, vintage 100-run knock against Sunrisers Hyderabad, putting to bed all kinds of questions about his form heading into the T20 World Cup 2024. Talking about Suryakumar Yadav stats, he came up with a huge statement on Monday at the Wankhede Stadium. SKY's IPL 2024 form before Mumbai Indians' home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad was up and down, as his scores were 0, 52, 0, 78, 10, 26, 10, 56. However, the World No 1 T20 batsman showed why he is rated the best in the world with a 51-ball 102 not out that helped MI stun the in-form Sunrisers.
4. Hardik Pandya (VC)
Star India all-rounder and vice-captain for the T20 World Cup, Hardik Pandya is not in the right place at the moment. The Mumbai Indians captain is going through a lot, especially his dip in form. Despite Hardik Pandya scoring a golden duck against LSG, he bagged 2 wickets from his 4-over spell. Against KKR, he was a bit expensive with the ball but managed to take 2 wickets before faltering with the bat yet again, 1 from 3 balls. On Monday, Hardik came up with his best performance with the ball in IPL 2024 thus far, claiming 3/31 in MI's victory over SRH. His three wickets in the middle overs dented SRH’s charge, and he was also relatively economical, giving away runs at 7.75 RPO. In the IPL 2024 season, Hardik Pandya has taken 11 wickets in 12 matches at an economy rate of 10.58.
5. Jasprit Bumrah
The star India pacer and leader of the Mumbai Indians' bowling attack Jasprit Bumrah has been the standout bowler in the IPL 2024 season. Famously called "Boom Boom", Bumrah continued his dominating bowling performance against SRH, returning economic figures of 4-0-23-1. Bowling alongside captain Hardik Pandya in the middle overs, his spell was crucial in restricting the SRH batters' momentum. Jasprit Bumrah now leads the IPL 2024 Purple Cap tally with 18 wickets in 12 matches at an economy rate of 6.20.
Famously called "Thalapathy", Ravindra Jadeja has been inconsistent this IPL 2024 season. Against PBKS, he batted well to score 43 from 26 and managed to take 3 wickets, giving just 20 runs in his 4 overs. In another huge relief, India’s destructive opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal, has found his form right before the T20 World Cup. Jaiswal is back among runs after a slow start to the IPL 2024 season. He smashed 67 from 40 balls in his match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. While Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube scored ducks, Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh leaked over 50 runs each in the games that followed the India T20 World Cup squad announcement.
