The wait is finally over as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced the 15-member India squad for the all-important ICC Champions Trophy 2025 set to be hosted in Pakistan and Dubai. It is to be noted that the Indian cricket team will play all their matches at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai including the big-ticket India vs Pakistan mega encounter scheduled to take place on 23 February, 2025. All the confusions and controversies can be put to rest as Rohit Sharma is the India captain for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 while Shubman Gill has been named his deputy. India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been included in the 15-member squad for the ODI tournament, but the confirmation on him being fully fit is still awaited and thus, Harshit Rana will be playing the India vs England three-match ODI series starting from 6 February, 2025.
ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Mohammed Siraj dropped from India ODI squad
After brilliant performances in the ODI World Cup 2023 played at home, the duo of skipper Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Shubman Gill have been picked as the first-choice openers for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. On the other hand, the BCCI selectors have also picked the in-form Yashasvi Jaiswal as the third opener who is yet to make his ODI debut. The trio of Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul have also retained their spots in the middle-order on the basis of their spectacular performances in the ODI World Cup 2023. KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are the two wicket-keeper batters in the 15-member India squad. There was no place for Sanju Samson after he recently missed the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 season for Kerala.
Hardik Pandya has been picked as the lone seam-bowling all-rounder in the India ODI squad both for the IND vs ENG three-match ODI series and ICC Champions Trophy 2025. However, the national selectors have named as many as four spin bowling options namely Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav. It is also to be noted that the trio of Jadeja, Axar and Washington can contribute both with the ball and bat on the slow pitches in Dubai.
The biggest update from the India squad announcement is that right-arm pacer Mohammed Siraj has been dropped as he isn't part of the side both for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and England ODIs. During the press conference, skipper Rohit Sharma stated that Siraj's ineffectivity with the new ball was the major reason behind his omission. On the other hand, the trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh are the specialist fast bowler in the squad. However, Bumrah's participation in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 still remains doubtful as the BCCI's medical team is yet to give the green signal on his fitness.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed that there was a discussion on Karun Nair's selection after he has delivered some staggering performances in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 season, but it was really tough to pick him in the 15-member squad. Team India will begin their campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 on 20 February, 2025 with their first match of the tournament is scheduled against Bangladesh set to be hosted at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. India is placed in the Group A alongside New Zealand, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
"It's unfortunate Mohammad Siraj has to miss out. Siraj's effectiveness comes down when the ball got older & he's not bowling with the new ball. We have no option but we wanted guys who can bowl with new ball, effective in middle overs & death overs as well," stated Indian captain Rohit Sharma during the press conference.
