Yashasvi Jaiswal turns up as the top performer as India vs Bangladesh wraps up in a historic result
Though the India vs Bangladesh Test series ended in a victory for India, it revealed various facets of the team. Some were promising, while others highlighted the concerns within the squad that need to be addressed before the Border Gavaskar Trophy. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal rarely gave a chance to complain. The 22-year-old was the only top-order player to come up with a match-saving knock in the Chennai Test. However, the Kanpur Test highlighted Jaiswal like never before. The opening batter played with aggressive intent, becoming a key factor in India's match-winning performance. Batting in Kanpur, showcasing the now-famous 'Jaisball', the youngster scored 72 off 51 balls in India's first innings. Moreover, returning in the second innings, the opener smashed another half-century to lead India to victory.
Rightfully, as the series concluded, Jaiswal was adjudged the 'Player of the Match' for his eye-catching and purposeful batting display. Remarkably, Jaiswal became the first Indian opener in the 92-year history of Indian cricket to register two half-centuries in both innings of a Test against Bangladesh.
After India’s victory over Bangladesh in Kanpur Test, Jaiswal shared insights into his mindset while batting on the fourth day at Green Park. His crucial half-century in the second innings steered India to a comfortable seven-wicket win over Bangladesh on Tuesday. In the match, Jaiswal's composed fifty in the second innings was instrumental in securing India's win.
"I think I was just thinking about what I can do for my team. The situation was different in Chennai, and different here. I was just trying to do what I should do for my team and was trying my best. Every innings is important. I try my best and prepare in that manner. Rohit bhai told me to play the way I want to. We had a chat that we had to at least put some scores, and we can play freely. We wanted to win this game, and we were just going for it," Jaiswal said in the post-match presentation.
Jaiswal now boasts eight scores of 50 or more in this calendar year, the highest by an Indian batsman at home in a single year. Previously, the record for most 50-plus scores in a year was shared by Gundappa Viswanath (1979), Virender Sehwag (2010), Cheteshwar Pujara (2016), and KL Rahul (2017), all of whom achieved seven such scores.
