India vs England: New BCCI guidelines are coming into practice

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has rolled out a stringent 10-point guideline for the senior men's cricket team, which was enforced ahead of the first T20I against England at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on January 22. These new rules were introduced following India's disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, where they suffered a 1-3 defeat to Australia. The BCCI’s decision to implement these measures is a direct response to the team's underperformance, particularly in the Test format, and aims to improve discipline, focus, and overall team dynamics. With India now preparing for a crucial five-match T20I series against England, followed by three ODIs, the stakes are high.

These matches serve as important preparation for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which will be a significant challenge for the team. In light of recent struggles in longer formats, the BCCI’s new guidelines aim to strengthen team cohesion, boost individual performances, and ensure a more professional approach to cricket. The guidelines are expected to create a more disciplined environment, pushing players to step up in all aspects of their game. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has communicated its new guidelines to all state cricket associations hosting the India-England series. One of the key changes introduced is that players must travel together in the team bus to and from both matches and practice sessions. This policy is part of a broader effort to enhance team unity, discipline, and professionalism following recent setbacks in international cricket.

In line with this directive, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), which is hosting the series at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, confirmed that no separate transportation arrangements have been made for individual players. This means that all members of the Indian squad, regardless of their stature or personal preferences, will adhere to the same travel arrangements, promoting a collective approach to the series.

This step by the BCCI reflects their intention to tighten the screws on player conduct, aiming to foster greater team cohesion and focus, both on and off the field. The new rules are likely to bring in more uniformity and professionalism, ensuring that the team remains aligned in their preparations for the crucial upcoming series against England and the ICC Champions Trophy.

"In keeping with the BCCI's 10-point guidelines for players, the Cricket Association of Bengal has not arranged any separate means of conveyance [for individual players]. Only a team bus has been arranged for the Indian team. There won't be any personal vehicles for the cricketers. We have to follow the guidelines, which clearly state that all players are expected to travel with the team to and from matches and practice sessions," CAB President Snehasish Ganguly said in a recent interview. 

The new BCCI guidelines mandate that players remain present for the entire duration of scheduled practice sessions, with exceptions only granted if pre-approved by the head coach or chief selector. This policy is aimed at instilling a stronger work ethic within the team, ensuring that players maintain focus and discipline during preparations. Another significant aspect of the guidelines is the mandatory participation in domestic cricket, which the BCCI believes is essential for keeping players in top form and ensuring their readiness for international duties. BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar emphasized that these measures are not meant as punishments but rather to foster a sense of discipline and commitment among the players.

While the BCCI has defended the necessity of these rules, they have sparked mixed reactions from players. Indian captain Rohit Sharma voiced concerns about the impact these restrictions may have on players' time with their families during long tours. However, Agarkar reiterated that adhering to such guidelines is essential for maintaining professionalism and team unity when representing the country. The BCCI's primary focus is to ensure that the team remains disciplined and well-prepared for the challenges ahead, including the upcoming series against England and the Champions Trophy 2025.
