Following a stellar performance in the T20 World Cup 2024 final, Virat Kohli made a notable return to the Indian cricket team after a brief hiatus. However, his recent form in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka has raised concerns. Despite high expectations, Kohli struggled to find his rhythm throughout the series played in Colombo. The series began with a dramatic first ODI that ended in a tie, setting the stage for an intense contest. Unfortunately for India, Sri Lanka managed to secure unexpected victories in the subsequent matches. In the second ODI, Sri Lanka triumphed by 32 runs, and they compounded India's disappointment with a commanding 110-run win in the third ODI.

Virat Kohli's performances comes under the scanner during India vs Sri Lanka ODI Series

Kohli's performance was a particular point of scrutiny. In the first ODI, he could only muster 24 runs, a figure that fell short of his usual high standards. His struggles were evident as he failed to make a significant impact in the remaining matches of the series. This slump in form comes after a period of remarkable success, casting a shadow over his recent performances.

The series against Sri Lanka has thus been a challenging one for Kohli, marking a rare dip in his illustrious career. As India looks to regroup and reassess, the focus will be on whether Kohli can regain his top form and lead his team to better performances in future engagements. Kohli's performance in the subsequent ODI matches against Sri Lanka continued to be underwhelming. After scoring just 24 runs in the first ODI, he followed up with modest scores of 14 and 20 in the next two games. This lackluster showing, given the high expectations placed on him, drew significant scrutiny from fans and critics alike.

Amid the growing criticism, former India cricketer Dinesh Karthik offered a perspective on the challenging conditions in Sri Lanka. Karthik acknowledged that batting in Sri Lanka can be particularly difficult, though he clarified that his comments were not intended as a defense of Kohli's performance. He highlighted that the conditions can often be harsh for batsmen, which might explain the struggles faced by even the best players. Karthik's insights aimed to provide context to Kohli's recent form and emphasize the broader challenges of playing in such conditions.

“It’s been a tough pitch to play spin in this series, let’s admit that first. Be it Virat Kohli, be it Rohit Sharma, or be it anyone else. With the slightly semi-new ball between overs of about 8 to 30, it’s been hard work. It’s nothing to worry about. Not too many pitches work that way, but it’s been a tough pitch to play spinners. I’m not going to defend Virat Kohli here, but I can tell you that playing spin was very hard,” said former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik in a recent interview.

Virat Kohli was poised to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record for being the fastest batter to reach 14,000 runs in ODI cricket. However, his recent performance in the series against Sri Lanka has delayed this milestone. Kohli, who was within striking distance of surpassing Tendulkar’s record, will now need to wait until January 2025 to achieve this feat in the 50-over format. This delay comes as a result of his struggles during the series, where he managed only modest scores of 24, 14, and 20 runs in the three ODIs. The high expectations surrounding Kohli only added to the scrutiny of his performances, making this missed opportunity particularly notable. As Kohli looks to regain his form, the wait to reach the 14,000-run milestone will continue, with fans eagerly anticipating his return to peak performance and the eventual achievement of this significant record.
