The Indian Premier League (IPL) match 8 between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) was a record-breaking one, in which records with bat and ball were broken left and right. The five-time champions, MI, lost the match by 31 runs, but more than the result, the records and pure entertainment will stay with the fans. It was a record-breaking evening at the Uppal Stadium in Hyderabad, where more than 500 runs were scored in the entire game. The run fest began with Travis Head (62 off 24) and Abhishek Sharma (63 off 23) smashing MI bowlers all around the park. Aiden Markram (42* off 28) and Heinrich Klaasen (80* off 34) joined the party as the South Africans stitched up a massive 116-run partnership, helping the Sunrisers post the highest total in the history of IPL (277/3).
Here's a look at the top 5 records broken in the SRH vs MI game.
1. Highest Team Total In IPL History
The Orange Army smashed the record books against Mumbai Indians in Match 8 of the IPL 2024 season. Their score of 277/3 is the highest-ever score in the history of the Indian Premier League. The previous record was held by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who posted a total of 263/5 in their 20 overs against Pune Warriors India back in 2013. In that match, Chris Gayle made 175* in 66 balls, with 13 fours and 17 sixes.
2. Highest T20 Match Aggregate Score
The run fest between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians is now the T20 match with the highest aggregate score. The two teams scored 523 runs in the entire game. SRH posted 277/3 while the five-time champions MI clobbered 246/5, overtaking the 517 runs made between South Africa and the West Indies last year. In the IPL, the previous highest run aggregate was 469 runs between CSK and RR in 2010.
3. Most Sixes In A T20 Match
The high-scoring thriller saw a total of 38 sixes being hit, 18 by Sunrisers Hyderabad and 20 by Mumbai Indians. It was a classic six-hitting festival at the Uppal Stadium in Hyderabad. This is the highest number of sixes hit in not only an IPL match but a T20 match as well. It overtook the 37 sixes hit in a game between Balkh Legends and Kabul Zwanan in their Afghanistan Premier League (APL) match in 2018.
4. Worst Bowling Figures On IPL Debut
South African U19 bowler Kwena Maphanka conceded 66 runs in his IPL debut match without taking any wickets, setting a new record for the worst figures by a bowler on his debut. It is the joint-third worst bowling figure in IPL history. SRH's Basil Thampi's 0/70 against RCB in 2018 is still the worst. Michael Neser's 0/62 for Punjab against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2013 has now moved to second on the list.
5. Most Runs In First 10 Overs In An IPL Innings
With the belter of a batting track at the Uppal Stadium in Hyderabad, it was always going to be a long night for the bowlers. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma made their intentions clear as Sunrisers Hyderabad smashed 148 runs in the first 10 overs. Later in the game, Mumbai Indians came close to breaking the record again during the chase as the five-time champions clobbered 141 runs in their first 10 overs.
