IPL 2024: Harpreet Brar Talks About Moving To Canada

Harpreet Brar's journey from contemplating a shift to Canada to becoming a pivotal figure in Punjab Kings' bowling arsenal is a testament to his perseverance and talent. The left-arm spinner, who made his IPL debut in 2019, faced moments of doubt in his cricketing aspirations years earlier. Disheartened by the lack of opportunities in India's domestic cricket scene during his formative years, Brar found himself at a crossroads, considering a move abroad for stability. However, fate had other plans for Brar. Since donning the Punjab Kings jersey, he has steadily carved out a niche for himself with his crafty spin bowling. His stellar performance against Chennai Super Kings, where he claimed the prized scalps of Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube en route to figures of 2/17, earned him the Player of the Match award.

“Paaji pura Punjab hi Canada jana chahta hai (The entire Punjab wants to go to Canada). Bahut frustration tha. (There was too much frustration). I was hopeless, but I think destiny had something else in store for me,” Harpreet Brar said during an interview with The Indian Express.

Brar's cricketing journey bore witness to twists and turns, marked by both frustration and triumph. Despite a promising start in U-16 cricket for Punjab, Brar faced setbacks when overlooked by junior selectors. Undeterred, he remained steadfast in his commitment to the sport and his homeland. In 2017, perseverance paid off as he secured a spot on the U-23 Punjab team, a turning point that showcased his talent.

Brar's shining moment came during the Col CK Nayudu Trophy, where his bowling prowess led Punjab to victory with an impressive tally of 57 wickets. Despite sporadic appearances for Punjab thereafter, his spirits remained undiminished. Two invaluable opportunities as a net bowler with the Indian cricket team injected renewed vigor into his aspirations. Rubbing shoulders with cricketing legends during the Asia Cup 2022 and the West Indies tour of India in the same year, Brar's skills caught the discerning eye of head coach Rahul Dravid, earning him well-deserved praise and encouragement. “Those words gave him hope. Everyone was impressed and surprised as well that I am yet to make my first-class debut. Two years have gone since but I am optimist that next time I will go in that dressing room as a player not as a net bowler,” Brar added.
