During a recent post-match show, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag was asked to choose between two young Indian cricket captains, Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad, in IPL 2024. In response, the legendary opener stated that while the Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill doesn't have enough "support," the latter has MS Dhoni on his side. However, amid CSK claiming their third win in the IPL 2024 season against Kolkata Knight Riders at Chepauk, where Ruturaj Gaikwad played a match-winning knock, Sehwag was all praise for the youngster as he handed him an MS Dhoni complement before labelling him as a perfect captaincy successor to the wicketkeeper-batter. Recalling his 2021 prediction, Sehwag explained that a captain can either be judged on the results he produces or by showing his leadership abilities.

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag backed his opinion by saying that no one had believed that MS Dhoni would lead a second-string Indian side to a T20 World Cup victory in 2007. But after his win, BCCI made him the ODI captain and later the Test skipper. Sehwag feels that while results are yet to be seen, Ruturaj Gaikwad has shown signs that he is the perfect heir to Dhoni in CSK.

"I had predicted this long back that he would be the captain of CSK because he had shown those signs and had the abilities. You can either look at a captain based on results or whether he has leadership abilities. And he has both. See, nobody expected MS Dhoni to win the T20 World Cup. But after he won, the expectations became bigger, and then they started thinking about making him the ODI captain as well. Same with Gaikwad, results will show with time, but he has definitely shown the signs that he is cool and calm and uses his bowlers well. He is the best player to captain CSK right now," Virender Sehwag said.

Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad led his team from the front as he played an impressive unbeaten knock of 67 runs off 58 balls that included a total of nine boundaries. However, fans would have ideally liked MS Dhoni to score the winning runs against KKR, but the 42-year-old allowed captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to finish the run chase in style. His crucial knock ensured that Chennai Super Kings successfully chased down the total with 14 balls to spare.

The defending champions Chennai Super Kings made a stunning comeback in the IPL 2024 season with an emphatic 7-wicket victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Ruturaj Gaikwad-led CSK are currently in the 4th position on the IPL 2024 points table. Both the bowlers and the batting line-up collectively chipped in, helping CSK pick up their third win in this T20 competition. CSK will next face Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on April 14.
