Stephen Fleming addressed the ongoing challenges faced by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the current IPL 2024 season, acknowledging the team's struggle to find a stable combination. The recent consecutive losses against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), particularly the defeat on their home turf where they conceded their highest-ever run-chase, have amplified the urgency for CSK to refine their strategies. Expressing concern over the team's inconsistency, Fleming emphasized the continuous experimentation with the lineup. Notably, Ajinkya Rahane's promotion up the batting order against Mumbai Indians (MI) marked a significant change, a move that has persisted due to its positive impact. Similarly, Ruturaj Gaikwad's repositioning to number 3 has proved fruitful, with notable performances including a fifty and a century. These adjustments represent a departure from CSK's traditional approach of steadfastly supporting their players.
Fleming conveyed that the primary focus remains on gradual improvement and rectifying the shortcomings within the team. The decision to drop Rachin Ravindra after a string of batting failures underscores the team's commitment to adaptability and the willingness to make tough choices to foster success. CSK's journey in the ongoing season reflects a departure from their usual stability, as they navigate through a phase of flux in search of the winning formula. Fleming's remarks underscore the team's determination to address their challenges head-on and regain their winning momentum amidst a fiercely competitive IPL landscape.
"It's a mix of trying to find that [the best XI], and also a bit of form. We are a little bit uncomfortable with some areas, so we're just trying to find not a quick fix but try and find the right combination," said Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming during a recent interview.
Mustafizur Rahman's presence in the squad has been sporadic due to visa complications, and he's set to return home in the coming days. Coach Fleming expressed the need to find suitable replacements, emphasizing the challenges posed by player injuries. Fleming also discussed the tactical adjustments made with Daryl Mitchell's batting position, acknowledging that experimentation led to him being out of his preferred slot. However, recognizing Mitchell's familiarity with a higher order placement, Fleming deemed it the correct decision.
Reflecting on CSK's historical reliance on spinners, the coach highlighted their current subdued impact. While acknowledging the commendable performances of Mustafizur Rahman and Matheesha Pathirana, Fleming urged the spin department to elevate their game in the upcoming matches.
"We've got another change coming up with Mustafizur in a couple of games. So we're just trying to prepare a side that will give us a run home. We have had injuries, we have been a little bit unsettled," Fleming added.
"We've got Pathirana who's a weapon, Fiz has done well when it's slow but the spin department has been made redundant and I'd love it to change," he concluded.
