IPL 2025: All about the reality of MS Dhoni retirement

Rumors have been rife about MS Dhoni retiring from IPL mid-season since the start of the CSK vs DC IPL 2025 match. IPL 2025 is not faring ideally for Chennai Super Kings and the former five-time title-winning captain. As the team continues losing their games by heavy margins, MS Dhoni finds himself as the centre of discussion around the team's shortcomings. The 43-year-old has continued playing as a full-time wicketkeeper and a batter under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, from his entry point in the CSK vs RCB match to his perceived 'lack of intent' in the recently concluded CSK vs DC match, every aspect of his campaign so far has been scrutinised by the fraternity and the fans.

MS Dhoni to retire mid-season in IPL 2025?

Amid the heated discussions, however, a whiff of a retirement update emerged from the CSK vs DC IPL 2025 match in Chepauk. The speculation picked pace when the former Indian captain's parents were spotted amid the spectators during the match. While Dhoni's wife, Sakshi Dhoni, and their daughter, Ziva Dhoni, are common sights during his matches, Dhoni's parents maintain a low profile away from the limelight. With his parents being spotted in attendance of the match at CSK's den, it was perceived as a sign of something big following the match. Moreover, parallels were drawn from the early days of Dhoni's career, when on 5 April 2005, the wicketkeeper-batter smashed a century in the India vs Pakistan match to announce his arrival.

To further add fuel to the fire, shortly after the match, a video went viral where Sakshi Dhoni could be seen saying something to her daughter. The netizens decoded her to be mentioning, "it's his last match," before adding "last ball," moments before CSK lost the match by 25 runs against Delhi Capitals. Fortunately for the Thala fans, no concrete update has followed all the speculations around the situation. Meanwhile, Dhoni finds himself amid scrutiny for his knock in the match where he scored 30* off 26 in the match where the asking run rate kept soaring despite him and Vijay Shankar at the crease.

Dhoni didn't look interested in taking the match closer to a point where victory looked possible. However, the 184-run chase seemed to have slipped away from the home team's hands right in the powerplay, where CSK lost three wickets cheaply. At the moment, nothing seems to be working for the five-time champions, right from the openers struggling and the middle being practically impactless.

The bowling department has the likes of Matheesha Pathirana and Noor Ahmad maintaining a tight grip, but with sloppy fielding, crucial runs are leaked anyway. To make matters worse, across the four matches, the team has noted multiple choppings, with the management toiling among the likes of Deepak Hooda, Sam Curran, Jamie Overton, Devon Conway, and Rahul Tripathi. And yet, the performance of the 43-year-old is the most crucial part of discussion for the 'seasoned' part of the fraternity.

Nonetheless, amidst all the speculations about his retirement, a recent interaction of Dhoni on a podcast has emerged. On several previous occasions, Dhoni has explained that he plays the game for the joy and excitement it brings him. The day playing the game stops feeling exciting, Dhoni would bow out. In the recent interaction, meanwhile, Dhoni explained that he gauges his plans on a year-to-year basis. If his body allows, he prepares for another season and takes the call accordingly. Chennai Super Kings next play on 8 April. The PBKS vs CSK IPL 2025 match scheduled in Mullanpur would be their fifth league stage match, and their second away fixture of the season.
