IPL 2025: Matthew Wade returns to Gujarat Titans in a brand new role
Former Australia wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade is set to make a return to the Gujarat Titans franchise for the IPL 2025 season, albeit in a new role. Wade, who has been a valuable player in various T20 leagues, will now take up a position on the team’s support staff. The 37-year-old will serve as the Assistant Coach, contributing his wealth of experience and knowledge to the squad’s development. Wade’s appointment marks an interesting shift as he moves from player to mentor, having previously been a key figure for Australia in T20s. He will work alongside an experienced backroom team that includes Ashish Nehra as the Head Coach.
Nehra, known for his strategic insight and vast cricketing experience, will guide the team, while Parthiv Patel takes charge of the batting unit as the Batting Coach. Aashish Kapoor and Narender Negi will also play pivotal roles as Assistant Coaches, rounding off a strong support staff for the Gujarat Titans. This reshuffling is part of the franchise’s efforts to build a well-rounded coaching structure that can further enhance their performance in the upcoming IPL season. Wade’s vast knowledge of the game, particularly his leadership in high-pressure situations, will be an invaluable asset to the Gujarat Titans as they look to defend their reputation and push for success in IPL 2025.

Matthew Wade played 12 matches for the Gujarat Titans across two IPL seasons (2022 and 2024), accumulating a total of 161 runs. After retiring from international cricket in October last year, Wade quickly transitioned into a coaching role. He assisted Andre Borovec during a T20I series against Pakistan while the main coaching staff focused on preparations for the Test series against India. Wade's shift from player to coach highlights his deep understanding of the game and his readiness to contribute to the next generation of cricketers.
Since their entry into the IPL in 2022, the Gujarat Titans made an impressive start, reaching the final in both their debut and second seasons. In their first year, they clinched the title, a remarkable achievement for a new franchise. However, the 2024 season saw a setback, as they won only five out of 14 league games, finishing eighth out of 10 teams. Despite this, the franchise remains a strong contender, and with Wade joining the coaching staff, the Titans will look to rebuild and push for a stronger performance in the upcoming season.
