In a much-awaited event, Wankhede bore witness to 'Mumbai Cha Raja' reclaiming his form. Rohit Sharma pulled up to the driving seat in the chase as he met the arch-rivals in the MI vs CSK IPL 2025 match. There are many words in the vocabulary to describe this victory by Mumbai Indians. However, to lay a synopsis, Chennai Super Kings failed 'comprehensively' at Wankhede, an instance that has been repeated consistently by the five-time champions in IPL 2025. While at par with the joint-most titles in the IPL, the latest win was the first one for Mumbai against Chennai since 2022. With CSK aiding as a stepping stone, Mumbai Indians are now on a three-match winning streak while their arch-rivals lose hopes of playoff contention.

CSK continue to struggle across departments as MI take the win in the second episode of IPL 2025 El Clasico

There is something about the batting of Chennai Super Kings batting in the powerplay that sets a meek tone for the innings ahead. Across the eight matches in the season so far, the number of times CSK has looked in control in the powerplay could be counted on fingers, with three fingers still remaining on your hand. The match seemed to have jumped out of Chennai's clinch right when MS Dhoni lost the toss and was put to bat first in the dew-impacted conditions in Mumbai. The action started soon after, as Rachin Ravindra departed on a rogue edge of his bat off Ashwani Kumar in the third over. Shaik Rasheed tried to extend his stay but with no significant impact.

The sole positive from the MI vs CSK match for Chennai was the debut of Ayush Mhatre. A part of the Mumbai domestic circuit, Ayush was playing at his home, but against the home. Mhatre, who joined the CSK squad as an injury replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad, got going from the onset. The teenager laced his T20 debut with 2 sixers and four 4s, taking seamlessly on the bowlers who troubled the rest of the CSK batters. The 32 off just 15 knock by the 17-year-old player put CSK in a better place.

However, with Mhatre departing against Deepak Chahar and Mitchell Santner removing Shaik Rasheed soon after, CSK settled into a slump. Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja held their ground to avoid a collapse. However, boundaries were rare as MI kept a check on the run flow. CSK still pushed to a fighting 174-run score, on the back of fifties by Dube and Jadeja. However, at a venue where 205 stands as the lowest total defended, CSK was set up for failure in the El Clasico.

Rohit Sharma arrives in IPL 2025 as MI vs CSK ends in a comprehensive 9-wicket win for the hosts at Wankhede

To make the chase interesting, Rohit Sharma took control in the MI vs CSK contest. Mumbai Indians have witnessed a hot-and-cold run in IPL 2025 so far. However, the most crucial aspect for their campaign to set on an upward charge was the redemption of Rohit Sharma. The former champion, meanwhile, marked the contest against arch-rivals to roar his arrival in the season. Rickelton survived an LBW dismissal, with CSK not intent on using the review. Makes one think if the said 'intent' has disappeared from all fronts for the former champions. Nonetheless, with Rohit and Rickelton finding the gaps, MI hit 62 runs at the loss of no wickets in the powerplay.

Ryan Rickelton departed after the powerplay as Ravindra Jadeja found a breakthrough. However, that remained the only breather for CSK in the chase. Sloppy fielding, easy run leaks, all the struggles from IPL 2025 so far followed CSK at Wankhede as well. Rohit Sharma hit his maiden fifty of the season, as it remained just a matter of when and not if MI would win the contest. The CSK bowlers, unfortunately, matched their batting attack, remaining impactless. The attack, or lack thereof, let the MI batters lose their shackles and drive the game home. With an unbeaten 76 off 45, partnered with the 68* off 30 by Suryakumar Yadav, led Mumbai Indians to their third consecutive victory of the season.

With this win, Mumbai Indians have charted up to the sixth spot on the IPL 2025 points table with 8 points in 8 matches. While MI fortify their case for playoff contention, Chennai Super Kings have been virtually kicked out of the competition. Still at the bottom of the table, the team led by MS Dhoni seems focused on preparing a young force for the upcoming season, as the ongoing campaign keeps slipping out of their clasp.
