IPL 2025: Who is Vignesh Puthur? All about Mumbai Indians debutant

There were not many positives for the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) during their opening match in the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) against arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) being hosted at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Incidentally, Mumbai Indians have failed to win their season opener since IPL 2013 and a similar story continued in 2025 as well, suffering a comprehensive 4-wicket loss in the El Clasico on Sunday. However, it was Kerala's left-arm wrist spinner Vignesh Puthur who became the talk of the town due to his amazing performance with the ball. 

Who is Vignesh Puthur IPL 2025 in the Mumbai Indians team?

Mumbai Indians were definitely short by 15-20 runs short during the first innings of the IPL 2025 clash against the Chennai Super Kings when they posted 155 runs on the scoreboard. CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad brought the run-chase to a mere formalities with a brilliant knock of 53 runs off just 26 balls that included 6 fours and 3 sixes. However, then came a slight twist in the game as Mumbai Indians introduced their secret weapon in Vignesh Puthur who came as the Impact Player. He first got rid of the dangerous looking Gaikwad and then also dismissed the duo of Shivam Dube and Deepak Hooda to bring back his team in the game. Even though MI ended up losing the match, Vignesh delivered a stunning performance on his IPL debut having finished with three crucial wickets and gave away 32 runs in his quota of four overs. 

Interestingly, Vignesh Puthur hails from Malappuram in Kerala, however, he did not play a single competitive game at the domestic level before the Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians IPL 2025 encounter. He was scouted by the MI team management from the Kerala Cricket League where the wrist spinner picked up as many as three wickets while playing for the Alleppey Ripples. The 24-year-old cricketer was then called up for the trials by the Mumbai Indians before eventually, handing over him his maiden IPL contract.
