The Indian team will be playing their opening game tomorrow against Ireland at the newly-built New York Cricket Stadium after playing 2 months of non-stop cricket in the concluded 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Throwing light on this much-anticipated game, former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan believes that India will be playing differently in the group stages games of the T20 World Cup and aim for a target of 150 runs as drop-in pitches of the USA continue to be a difficult thing to understand for batters. It’s the first time, USA has been given the hosting responsibility of the ICC event to promote cricket globally, but the drop in pitches which have been used have become a bowling paradise for bowlers as they are not only getting assistance from the pitch but also getting support from slow outfield too.
India will be playing their first T20 International match after January 2024. The last T20I game they played was against Afghanistan after the Indian team played a 5-match Test Series against England and took part in the IPL from their respective franchise. But the main point of concern for the Indian fans is that Men in Blue will be playing the first three of its four league games at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, which is not a good track for batsmen after seeing the matches of other teams.
Talking about this Irfan Pathan said, the Indian team needs to come out with a different plan and avoid playing aggressively.
"Kohli will have a lead role in setting the template on these kind of pitches and determining what could be a good score for the team as per the conditions. You may also see India try to score 140-150 every game and not aim to go past the 200-210 mark. If they score it then well and good, but the idea would be to get past that 150-run mark," Pathan said.
India will play against Ireland tomorrow at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York before facing arch-rivals Pakistan at the same venue on June 9.
