This hefty bid highlighted the value KKR places on Iyer's all-round abilities and his potential to impact the team in the upcoming season. On the other hand, Ajinkya Rahane, who was also a strong contender for the captaincy role, faced a more unexpected situation in the auction. When his name was first called, Rahane went unsold, leaving many surprised. However, KKR recognized his leadership qualities and vast experience, and they swooped in to secure him for his base price of ₹1.5 crore when teams were allowed to recall unsold players.

"IPL is quite an intense tournament. We think very well of Venkatesh Iyer, but at the same time, [captaincy] is taxing on a youngster. We have seen lots of people facing challenges with it as they go forward. It takes a very steady hand, a lot of maturity, and experience, which we felt Ajinkya brings with him," stated KKR CEO Venky Mysore in a recent interview.

Ajinkya Rahane will be taking over the captaincy of Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2025, replacing Shreyas Iyer, who led the team to victory in the 2024 season. In a surprising move, Punjab Kings secured Iyer’s services, leaving KKR with the task of finding a new leader. For Rahane, this marks his second stint with the franchise. He first joined KKR in 2022, a season in which the team had an underwhelming performance, finishing seventh on the points table. Rahane, however, brings with him a wealth of experience and leadership qualities, which KKR believes will be crucial for the upcoming season.

A veteran of the IPL, Rahane has represented six different franchises over the years and is one of the few players who has been part of the league for nearly two decades. In the IPL, he has captained 25 matches, first for Rising Pune Supergiants and later for Rajasthan Royals. Rahane also had an impressive Ranji Trophy season with Mumbai, scoring 467 runs in nine matches, including a century.
