Former pacer Ashish Nehra recently voiced his criticism regarding a decision made by his former teammate and current India head coach, Gautam Gambhir. Nehra took issue with Gambhir's choice to include senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the ongoing ODI series against Sri Lanka. Despite India's strong track record, the team, guided by Gambhir, is currently trailing 0-1 in the three-match series against the island nation. Nehra's criticism is rooted in the timing of this series, which follows a grueling season that included the IPL 2024 and the T20 World Cup. Given the demanding schedule and the packed home season ahead, it was anticipated that the senior players might be given a break during this tour to manage their workloads and to refresh themselves. Instead, Gambhir opted to retain Sharma and Kohli, a decision that Nehra feels missed a valuable opportunity to test and integrate new talent into the squad.

According to Nehra, this series could have served as an ideal platform for emerging players to gain experience and showcase their abilities. By focusing on the senior players, Gambhir might have overlooked the chance to assess and develop the future stars of Indian cricket. Nehra’s comments reflect a broader debate about balancing the needs of experienced players with the importance of nurturing new talent, especially during less critical phases of international cricket.

“The next series India play is 2-3 months later, a rare thing for us. So for players like Rohit and Kohli...I feel there was a better chance of giving opportunities to other players during this series. I know Gambhir is a new coach, and he wants to spend some time with the experienced players, but it isn't like he doesn't know the two of them," former India left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra said on Sony Sports Network.

The former bowler, Ashish Nehra, highlighted that Gautam Gambhir, the current India head coach, should not have needed to establish a rapport with senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, as Gambhir is well-acquainted with both. Nehra pointed out that since Gambhir is not a foreign coach and is familiar with the star duo, this familiarity should have facilitated more strategic decisions.

However, Gambhir’s choice to retain Sharma and Kohli in the ongoing ODI series against Sri Lanka appears to be influenced by their recent retirement from T20 Internationals and the limited number of ODI fixtures leading up to the 2025 Champions Trophy. This series provides a crucial opportunity for the experienced players to gain valuable match practice in the 50-over format, ensuring they are in peak form for upcoming competitions.

The results of the series thus far have been mixed. Rohit Sharma has shown impressive form, scoring consecutive half-centuries, while Virat Kohli has faced difficulties against Sri Lankan spinners. India's overall performance has been inconsistent, highlighted by a tie in the first ODI and a 32-run defeat in the second, despite a strong start in their chase. The team’s struggles underscore the challenges they face, with the third and final fixture of the series scheduled for August 7.

"He is not a foreign coach who wants to get his equation right with Kohli and Rohit. So it was a good opportunity for him to try out the new players, and Rohit and Kohli could play when the home season begins. I'm not saying it is a wrong approach, but it could have been one of the strategies in this series,” Nehra added.
