Royal Challengers Bangalore made a surprising announcement on Thursday in Bengaluru, revealing that they have appointed a new captain for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. The announcement event was attended by team director Mo Bobat, head coach Andy Flower, and batter Rajat Patidar. Patidar, who has been with RCB since 2021, has quickly become a key player for the franchise, scoring 799 runs in 28 matches at an impressive strike rate of 158.85. This will be Patidar’s first captaincy role in the IPL, although he has prior leadership experience. The 31-year-old led his state team, Madhya Pradesh, during the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy, marking his first full-time captaincy assignments in domestic cricket.

Rajat Patidar has proven his prowess with the bat, with standout performances in domestic cricket. In the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he was the second-highest run-scorer, amassing 428 runs in nine innings at a remarkable average of 61.14 and a blistering strike rate of 186.08. His consistency continued in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he scored 226 runs at an impressive average of 56.50, with a strike rate of 107.10.
