After Rohit Sharma retired from the shorter format of the game, the Indian fans were eagerly waiting to see who would be the new captain of the Indian cricket team in T20I who would take the legacy forward of the World Cup-winning team in 2026 T20 World Cup which will be hosted in India only. It would not be wrong to say that several candidates for this position have shown their captaincy skills on the international stage in different leagues, weather it’s Hardik Pandya or Shubman Gill. But the Indian management has decided to go with Suryakumar Yadav as the captain of the Indian cricket team for the Sri Lanka series, where they have announced Shubaman Gill as the vice-captain for the series in the position of Hardik Pandya.
Through this article, we are going to talk about the Pros and Cons of Suryakumar as the captain of the Indian cricket team:
Pros
1. Expertise in the Shorter format of the game
Suryakumar Yadav, who has recently achieved number 1 T20I ranking in the shorter format of the game after his brilliant performance in the 9th edition of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, where he scored 199 runs in 8 games, having 2 fifties to his name shows his expertise in the shorter format of the game. SKY has been playing this format for a long time under difficult conditions. So, he can use his presence of mind to help India.
2. A Good bond with India's head coach
We know Gautam Gambhir has been announced as the head coach of the Indian Cricket team, where he will be taking Rahul Dravid's legacy forward with his vision and a true sportsman spirit. But for that, he needs equal support from the skipper. After the appointment of Suryakumar Yadav as the captain we can say that they both have a great bond with each other as the star batter was part of the KKR franchise under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhit in 2012 and 2014 season. It will really help them to take the team forward on the international stage.
3. Fitness Advantage
Despite the age of 33, the Right-hand batsman has been working hard on his fitness since the part of the Indian team he has not gotten injured, which is a good advantage for the Indian team as it will create a big impact on upcoming young players to take motivation from their captain and work hard on their fitness.
Cons
1. Not to be considered for a long time
Suryakumar Yadav is 33 years old and the next T20 World Cup is in 2026, he will be 35. Looking at his current age and fitness, he can seen playing for the next 3 years, so the Indian team can't see him for long periods due to his growing age and for that, they need to have a person from 3 years now who can take the leadership role. However, it totally depends on SKY how he maintains his fitness level.
2. Not having much experience as a captain on an international stage
Irrespective of his experience in the shorter format, he does not have international experience in leading the team. He captained the Indian team just 1 time in the 5-match T20I series against Australia, where he helped the Indian team win the series by 4-1.
Suya's journey as a captain of the Indian cricket team will start with the Sri Lanka series, where he will be seen leading Men in Blue in 3 T20Is series.
