India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been in phenomenal form, leading the charge in the ongoing Test series against Australia. With 12 wickets in the first two matches, Bumrah is the leading wicket-taker of the series and a key player for the Indian bowling attack. Despite his stellar performances, Bumrah has largely been a lone warrior, with limited support from the rest of the pace unit. Harshit Rana showcased promise in the first Test in Perth, delivering some impactful spells, but he struggled to replicate that form in the Day-Night Test in Adelaide. Mohammed Siraj stepped up in Adelaide and performed commendably, yet consistency remains an issue. Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar weighed in on the situation, praising Harshit’s potential and Siraj’s determination, but emphasized the need for both to raise their game.
The 75-year-old cricketing icon pointed out that for India to compete effectively, Bumrah requires more substantial support from his fellow pacers. Gavaskar expressed hope that Siraj could work towards achieving the consistency needed to secure five-wicket hauls, which would significantly bolster India’s chances. With the third Test set to take place at the Gabba, a venue renowned for pace-friendly conditions, Gavaskar believes that a collective effort from the bowling unit is crucial. As India prepares for this pivotal encounter, the focus will be on building a more cohesive and effective bowling attack, ensuring that Bumrah’s exceptional efforts are complemented by his teammates to keep Australia in check.
“Yes, to a great extent. You've got to say that. Mohammed Siraj is a good foil, but he has to start getting five wickets in an innings. Otherwise, the load is being picked up mainly by Jasprit Bumrah. But if Siraj can pick up two, three wickets, keep on breaking partnerships, then he certainly helps Jasprit Bumrah. Harshit Rana, the newcomer, bowled impressively in Perth, wasn't as impressive in the second game at Adelaide,” said former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar in a recent interview.
“Maybe he just couldn't find his rhythm, therefore, was not bowling the length that he should have, or the line that he should have. But hopefully, he will have learned. And then that makes it easy. It takes the load off Bumrah. Bumrah can then come in, in short bursts of four or five overs, and be much more effective,” he added.
The Australia vs India Test series is finely balanced at 1-1, setting the stage for a crucial third match at the Gabba. This encounter holds immense significance, as the winner will not only secure an important lead in the series but also take a significant step forward in the race to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Both teams are eyeing a spot in the prestigious finale, making the Gabba Test a high-stakes affair. A victory here would provide a considerable boost in points and momentum for the winning side, strengthening their chances of making it to the WTC summit clash.
Conversely, a loss could dent their campaign, leaving little room for error in the remaining India vs Australia matches. With the series so tightly contested, the pressure is mounting on both teams to deliver their best performances. Australia, known for their dominance at the Gabba, will look to exploit their home advantage, while India, driven by their gritty fightback in the previous game, will aim to replicate their historic win at this venue in 2021.
