Former Indian coach Rahul Dravid hailed skipper Rohit Sharma, saying that it was a privilege for him to work with Sharma. The coach-skipper duo of Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma led India to a historic 2024 T20 World Cup win. India claimed an ICC Trophy after a long wait of over a decade. Moreover, the 2024 victory was the second T20 World Cup win for India after the inaugural season win back in 2007 under MS Dhoni. Following the win, Rahul Dravid made way for Gautam Gambhir to assume the position of head coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, announced his retirement alongside Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja after attaining the coveted title.
Rahul Dravid Heaps Praise On Senior Indian Players
Rohit Sharma boasts a stunning captaincy record in the shortest format of the game. The 37-year-old surpassed the legendary Indian captain MS Dhoni with his T20I exploits. Rohit Sharma registered his name as the most successful T20I captain of India with 49 wins in 62 matches, while Dhoni had 41 victories from 72 games. Adding feathers to his already illustrious captaincy cap, the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup title win against South Africa in Barbados came under Sharma’s leadership, ending India's 11-year ICC trophy drought.
Talking about his equation with the Indian skipper, Rahul Dravid credited Sharma as a spectacular leader. The former Indian batter went on to say that working with Sharma as the head coach of the Indian team across formats was a privilege for him.
"I think it was a privilege to work with Rohit. In these two and a half years, I think he was a fantastic leader. People really gravitated towards him, the team. I think that makes a big difference,” Dravid said.
The former head coach furthermore opened up about senior players like Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. Dravid noted that despite being such prominent figures in India and across the cricketing world, the likes of Sharma, Kohli, and Bumrah remain humble in their preparations.
"There were a lot of other senior players as well, whether it was Virat, Bumrah, or Ashwin in Test cricket. So many of them—just because a lot of Indian cricketers are big names, and they are superstars, and rightly so, and they're followed by so many people—sometimes people think that they have big egos and that they are very difficult to manage,” Dravid said.
“But actually, I think it's just the opposite. A lot of these superstars are actually very humble about their preparation. They are humble about their work ethic. And that is why they are superstars,” Dravid concluded.
