It is safe to say that Jasprit Bumrah is solely carrying the Indian campaign on his shoulders in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy. The batting lineup has been a source of utter disappointment down under, with the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma failing to make an impact. Moreover, the bowling department beyond Bumrah, consisting of Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Ravindra Jadeja, has not made much of an impact in the Gabba Test either. Despite playing without solid support from the others, Bumrah didn’t let the fatigue show when he addressed the press following the conclusion of the third day of the Gabba Test.
Jasprit Bumrah reminds the media of his batting record following Day 3 of the Gabba Test
Jasprit Bumrah is the silver lining in an otherwise disappointing outing for India down under, which appears as a black cloud. In the five innings so far, Bumrah has picked up 18 wickets at an average of 11.72. The rest of the pace department, consisting of Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, Akash Deep, and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, has collectively taken 19 wickets. In the Gabba Test, Bumrah claimed a six-wicket haul to finally wrap up the Australian innings at 445. Moreover, India's batting lineup is an even more disappointing tale. In reply to Australia's 445, Indian batters finished Day 3 at 51/4. At this point, the entire Indian team seems to be relying on Jasprit Bumrah.
Despite carrying the entire BGT campaign, Jasprit Bumrah shared a light moment during the press conference following the third day of the Gabba Test. A reporter aimed to ask Bumrah about the team's batting conditions. However, while framing his question, the reporter referred to Bumrah as 'not the right person to answer it.' Taking note of the remark, Bumrah asked the reporter to check who has hit the most runs in an over in Test cricket.
"Hi, Jasprit. What is your assessment of the batting, although you are not the best person to answer the question, but what do you think about the situation of the team, considering the conditions in Gabba?," the reporter asked Bumrah.
“It's an interesting question. But, you are questioning my batting ability. You should use Google and see who has got the most number of runs in a Test over. But, jokes apart. That's another story," Bumrah answered.
The context of Bumrah's answer dates back to 2022 when the seamer captained India against England in a Test. Batting at the tail end of the innings, Bumrah smashed 35 runs in an over against Stuart Broad. The pacer hit two maximums and four fours against Broad, who bowled a wide and a no-ball in the over. The 35 runs are still recorded as the most hit by a batter in an over in the longer format.
