In a surprising move ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) decided not to retain their title-winning captain, Shreyas Iyer, despite leading them to the IPL 2024 championship. This decision shocked the cricketing world, as it marked the first time in IPL history that a winning captain from the previous season would not be part of the franchise for the upcoming edition. KKR's decision to part ways with Iyer left many puzzled, especially given his crucial role in leading the team to victory. However, Iyer’s talent did not go unnoticed, as Punjab Kings (PBKS) seized the opportunity to acquire him for a staggering INR 26.75 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction. This marked a new chapter in Iyer’s IPL career, as he moved from one high-profile team to another.
Recently, Iyer opened up about the decision to part ways with KKR and why he ultimately opted to enter the auction. The Mumbai batter explained that the decision was mutual and based on certain differences in direction between him and the franchise. Although it was a tough call, Iyer emphasized that both he and KKR were ready to move on, and he was excited to start a new chapter with PBKS.
“Certainly, I had a fantastic time winning the championship at KKR. The fan following was outstanding, they were electrifying in the stadium and I loved every moment I spent there. So obviously, we had a conversation straight after the IPL championship. But for a few months, there was a layover and no concrete effort in having a retention talk. I was perplexed about what’s happening. So, because of a lack of communication, we came to a situation where we parted ways, mutually. And that’s the long and short of it," Shreyas Iyer told The Indian Express.
“Yes, obviously disappointed, because when you don’t have a certain line of communication and if you get to know things one week prior to the retention date, then obviously something is lacking over there. So, I had to take a call. Whatever is written is supposed to happen," the PBKS captain added.
Shreyas Iyer has had an impressive IPL career, having represented two franchises so far. Over the course of 116 matches, he has accumulated 3,127 runs at an average of 32.23. Known for his consistency and leadership qualities, Iyer has been a key player for his teams in various seasons. His move to Punjab Kings ahead of IPL 2025 marks a new chapter in his career, as this will be the third franchise he will play for. Iyer will be eager to make an impact and help PBKS secure their first-ever IPL title. His experience and skills as a top-order batter, along with his ability to lead, will be invaluable for the Punjab-based side as they aim to make a strong run in the upcoming season. With his track record and determination, Iyer will be hoping to lift the trophy and further solidify his place as one of IPL's standout players.
